Klemensker Bakke
Klemensker is a village in the north-western part of the Danish island of Bornholm. With a population of 633 (1 January 2022), it is located on a crossroads 13 km north-east of Rønne, 7 km east of the coastal town Hasle and 12 km south of Allinge. It is known for its cheese production. Beginning at the village inn, Klemens Kro, the road (Danish ''vej'') Simblegårdsvej begins with an extremely steep drop and later a long climb up the Klemensker Bakke (''Klemensker Hill''). The farm (Danish ''gård''/google:''gaard'') Simblegård is to the north. History The origins of Klemensker possibly date back to around 3800 BC with evidence of a community in today's Smedegade. A number of runestones have been found in the village while some of the roads are documented in records from the 14th century. Bornholm
Bornholm () is a Danish island in the Baltic Sea, to the east of the rest of Denmark, south of Sweden, northeast of Germany and north of Poland. Strategically located, Bornholm has been fought over for centuries. It has usually been ruled by Denmark, but also by Sweden and by Lübeck. The ruin of Hammershus, at the northwestern tip of the island, is the largest medieval fortress in northern Europe, testament to the importance of its location. Hammershus
Hammershus is a medieval era fortification at Hammeren on the northern tip of the Danish island of Bornholm. The fortress was partially demolished around 1750 and is now a ruin. It was partially restored around 1900. History Hammershus was Scandinavia's largest medieval fortification and is one of the largest medieval fortifications in Northern Europe. It is situated in the Baltic Sea above sea level. The fortification was erected in the 13th century and consists of the base castle residence and features a grand tower called the "mantel" tower. Hammershus Fortress features a perimeter wall around the castle grounds. Allinge-Sandvig
Allinge-Sandvig is a small town on the northern coast of the Baltic island of Bornholm, Denmark. Its population is 1,459 (1 January 2022). It was part of the former municipality Allinge-Gudhjem. Sandvig is the northernmost part of the town. History Prior to Allinge and Sandvig becoming urban areas, people in the Bronze Age lived there and made rock carvings at Madsebakke. Not all carvings of ships, suns, and footprints have survived, however. Late in the 19th century, stone quarries flourished in the area and some rock carvings were blown up between 1885 and 1902. Allinge and Sandvig were two separate towns, the former formed near the natural harbour on the northwestern coast, while Sandvig has been a small fishing village, whose origins can be traced to the Middle Ages, its name derived from a sandy cove on the coast. Danish Blue
Danablu, often marketed under the trademark Danish Blue Cheese within North America, is a strong, blue-veined cheese. This semi-soft creamery cheese is typically drum- or block-shaped and has a yellowish, slightly moist, edible rind. Made from full fat cow's milk and homogenized cream, it has a fat content of 25–30% (50–60% in dry matter) and is aged for eight to twelve weeks. Before ageing, copper wires or rods are used to pierce the formed curds to distribute the mould ('' Penicillium roqueforti'') evenly through the cheese. The holes can still be seen when the finished wheel is cut open. Danablu was invented early in the 20th century by a Danish cheese maker named Marius Boel with the intention of emulating a Roquefort-style cheese. Danablu has a milder flavor characterised by a sharp, salty taste, and is often served crumbled on salads or as a dessert cheese with fruit. Paul Høm
Paul Briegel Høm (2 May 1905, Ballerup – 25 September 1994, Gudhjem) was a Danish artist who is remembered for his religious paintings and brightly coloured stained glass windows which decorate a number of Danish churches. Biography Høm studied at the Danish Academy from 1924 to 1929 under Aksel Jorgensen and Sigurd Wandel. His painting, primarily inspired by Jørgensen, was mainly of members of his family, especially his wife and children whom he depicted in strong bright colours. In 1943, he moved to Gudhjem on the island of Bornholm where his work benefitted from the bright light and his friendship with Helge Nielsen. He decorated a number of churches with altarpieces, frescos and mosaics, especially on Bornholm, often working with the architect Rolf Graae. His work can also be found in Kvong Church near Varde, Bräkne-Hoby in Blekinge (1957–59) and Christian's Church in Lyngby. Several of his works were completed together with whom he married in 1947. Runestone
A runestone is typically a raised stone with a runic inscription, but the term can also be applied to inscriptions on boulders and on bedrock. The tradition began in the 4th century and lasted into the 12th century, but most of the runestones date from the late Viking Age. Most runestones are located in Scandinavia, but there are also scattered runestones in locations that were visited by Norsemen during the Viking Age. Runestones are often memorials to dead men. Runestones were usually brightly coloured when erected, though this is no longer evident as the colour has worn off. The vast majority of runestones are found in Sweden. Statistics Denmark ( da, Danmarks Statistik) is a Danish governmental organization under the Ministry of the Interior and Housing and which reports to the Minister of Economic and Internal Affairs.
