Kiron is a town in Crawford County, Iowa, United States. The population was 267 at the time of the 2020 census. History Kiron was platted in 1899. It was supposedly named after a place in China. Another popular etymology is that the town was named after the Kidron Valley, in the Bible, but due to a typographical error, the D had been omitted. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all land. Kiron is six miles east of U.S. Route 59 at Iowa Highway 39. Kiron Lenses were photographic lenses distributed by the Kiron Corporation, formerly based in Carson, California, United States. History The company was set up as a U.S. subsidiary of Kino Precision Industries Limited, Tokyo, Japan and registered as a trademark on Jan 25 1980, in order to market manually focused film camera optical lenses to the United States. Kino Precision was founded in 1959 by Tatsuo Kataoka to manufacture lenses for 8mm movie cameras. Originally, Kino Precision manufactured some of the now-famous ''Series 1'' manual focus lenses under contract for Vivitar, a U.S. lens distributor of after-market film lenses for 35mm cameras. Kiron Kanina Skinner (born 1961) is a former Director of Policy Planning at the United States Department of State in the Trump administration. Skinner is presently the Taube Professor of International Relations and Politics at the Pepperdine University School of Public Policy, where she teaches graduate courses in national security and public leadership. Prior to that, she was the Taube Professor of International Relations and Politics at Carnegie Mellon University, and the founding director of the Institute for Politics and Strategy and associated centers at the university. She is also the W. Glenn Campbell Research Fellow at the Hoover Institution. After leaving the Department of State, she returned to her position at Carnegie Mellon University until stepping down in 2021. Old Kiron, Iowa
Old Kiron was an unincorporated community in Crawford County, in the U.S. state of Iowa. Today, it is the site of a few scattered farms in what is essentially a ghost town. History Early years Originally named Kiron, the community was platted at the corners of sections 5, 6, 7, and 8 in Stockholm Township. The community was founded by Swedish immigrants. A post office opened in Kiron in 1872. Andrew Norelius served as the Kiron postmaster for 18 years. Proposals for the name of the community included Swedeboy and Swedeberg, but there were already towns in Iowa with similar names. Lars Olson and A. Norelius settled on Kiron, named after a place in Mongolia. The Swede Brothers opened a store in Kiron circa 1882; this store became the Lester & Cole store in 1890, and became the G.A.
