Old Kiron, Iowa
Old Kiron was an unincorporated community in Crawford County, in the U.S. state of Iowa. Today, it is the site of a few scattered farms in what is essentially a ghost town. History Early years Originally named Kiron, the community was platted at the corners of sections 5, 6, 7, and 8 in Stockholm Township. The community was founded by Swedish immigrants. A post office opened in Kiron in 1872. Andrew Norelius served as the Kiron postmaster for 18 years. Proposals for the name of the community included Swedeboy and Swedeberg, but there were already towns in Iowa with similar names. Lars Olson and A. Norelius settled on Kiron, named after a place in Mongolia. The Swede Brothers opened a store in Kiron circa 1882; this store became the Lester & Cole store in 1890, and became the G.A. Ells, Iowa
Ells was an unincorporated community in Crawford County, in the U.S. state of Iowa. Today it is a ghost town. History Ells was a village in Stockholm Township, Crawford County, Iowa, platted in either 1899 or 1900. A post office was established in Ells on January 24, 1900 by Benjamin F. Ells. News of the new post office appeared in the ''Daily Iowa Capital'' in Des Moines on February 15, 1900. Ells, located one mile south of Boyer, was on the Illinois Central Railroad and had a train depot and general store in 1911. Benjamin Ells served as the postmaster, appointed by President William McKinley. The post office at Ells was discontinued April 15, 1914. In 1915, the population of Ells was 26. Odebolt is a city in Sac County, Iowa, United States. The population was 994 at the time of the 2020 census. History Odebolt was platted in 1877 when the Chicago & Northwestern Railway was extended to that point. Odebolt was incorporated as a city May 13, 1878. While the etymology of Odebolt's unusual name is unquestioned — being named after the Odebolt Creek — the etymology of the creek's name is disputed. It has been ascribed to a story of a French fur trapper and to multiple stories of a bolt falling in the creek. The trapper's name was reportedly Odebeau, and his name corrupted.
