Kingscote, South Australia
Kingscote is a town in the Australian state of South Australia located on Kangaroo Island about south-west of the state capital of Adelaide. It is South Australia's oldest European settlement and the island's largest town. At the 2016 census, Kingscote had a population of 1,790. It is a well-established tourist centre and the administrative and communications centre. It is home to a colony of the smallest penguins in the world, the little penguin. The town is served by Kingscote Airport with passenger flights on two airlines. The Kangaroo Island Council is a local government area in South Australia that covers the entirety of Kangaroo Island, 13 km off the coast of the mainland. The council was formed on the 28 November 1996 by the amalgamation of the District Council of Kingscote and the District Council of Dudley. Its first meeting held on 11 December 1996. MV ''Troubridge'' was a ferry that served the South Australian coastal trade between Port Adelaide, Kingscote on Kangaroo Island and Port Lincoln. It was built by Evans Deakin & Company, of Brisbane, Queensland as a roll on roll off ferry to minimise loading time and maximise time spent at sea.
