''King of Sweet'' is a compilation album by His Name Is Alive, originally released in a limited run by the Perdition Plastics label in 1993. Most, if not all, of the songs had previously appeared on the band's many self-released cassettes in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and some of them had appeared in different versions on the band's 4AD releases. History By 1993, His Name Is Alive's albums were generally being released by 4AD in both the USA and the UK. However, leader Warren Defever did not have an exclusive contract with 4AD. Defever stated in interviews that the arrangement with 4AD was quite loose; 4AD president Ivo Watts-Russell would release what he was interested in, and Defever was free to release the rest elsewhere. While this mostly resulted in homemade cassettes released through Defever's Time Stereo imprint, a CD called ''King of Sweet'' appeared in the fall of 1993. His Name Is Alive
His Name Is Alive is an American experimental rock band/project from Livonia, Michigan. After several self-released cassettes, they debuted on 4AD Records in 1990, starting a long run at the label. Throughout the band's long history, leader Warren Defever has been the only constant member, with a variety of musicians and singers contributing over the years. Biography Defever began recording in his basement in 1985, while still in high school. His initial work consisted primarily of Defever alone recording the music to a 4-track recorder, with friend Angie Carozzo providing vocals. After Defever went off to college and met Karin Oliver, she became the band's primary vocalist. The group's work resulted in a self-released cassette. Defever sent the tape to 4AD in hopes of being signed to the label. ''Mouth by Mouth'' is the third studio album by American rock band His Name Is Alive, released by 4AD in 1993. Recording While Karin Oliver sang lead vocals on nearly all of His Name Is Alive's songs up to this point, ''Mouth by Mouth'' used a wide variety of Warren Defever's associates on vocals. The lead vocalists on the album are as follows: Karen Neal sings tracks 1, 2 and 4; Karin Oliver sings tracks 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 15 and 17; Chelle Marie Ehlers sings tracks 6 and 8; and Denise James sings tracks 11, 13, 14 and 16. ''Stars on E.S.P.'' is an album by His Name Is Alive, released by 4AD in 1996. History ''Stars on E.S.P.'' had the longest gestation period of any His Name Is Alive album, a project that band leader Warren Defever spent three years crafting before it saw release. In his notes written at the time of the album's release, he mentions that he began work on "I Can't Live in This World Anymore" in December 1992, right after the completion of '' Mouth by Mouth''. The project took so long for a few reasons: HNIA's 1993 tour in support of ''Mouth by Mouth''; the death of Defever's mother in 1994, which led his father to move to Florida, leaving the house to Defever and him living alone for the first time; and various other projects that were started but mostly left uncompleted. Warren Defever (first name often spelled Warn; born April 30, 1969) is a musician and producer, originally from Livonia, Michigan, and now based in Detroit. He is most known for his chameleonic project His Name Is Alive, though he is active in numerous other circles. He produced, engineered, and/or remixed recordings by Iggy and the Stooges, Easy Action, Low, Ida, Michael Hurley, Califone, Yoko Ono, Thurston Moore, the Gories, the Go, Nomo, Saturday Looks Good to Me, Ethan Daniel Davidson, Faruq Z. Ivo Watts-Russell
Ivo Watts-Russell (born 1954) is a British music producer and record label executive. He was joint-founder with Peter Kent of the indie record label 4AD. He has produced several records, although he prefers to use the term "musical director". Early years Watts-Russell was born in Edinburgh, the youngest of eight children of Major David Watts-Russell and Gina Spinola (née Baker); he "never related emotionally" to either of his parents, and grew up "on a dilapidated Northamptonshire estate in an atmosphere of almost Victorian froideur". ''Home Is in Your Head'' is the second studio album by His Name Is Alive, originally released via 4AD in the UK on September 9, 1991, and on Rykodisc in the United States in 1992. History Like their 4AD debut, ''Livonia'', His Name Is Alive's ''Home Is in Your Head'' comprises tracks that originated in Warren Defever's basement on a 4-track recorder, later remixed by Ivo Watts-Russell and John Fryer into something suitable for release. ''Always Stay Sweet'' is a compilation album by His Name Is Alive, released by 4AD on February 23, 1999. History ''Always Stay Sweet'' is one of the rare 4AD albums that was released in the USA only, and not the label's native UK. It is a compilation of tracks from His Name Is Alive's first five records for the label, all of which—except for ''Stars on ESP''—were out of print in America at the time. This is presumably part of the reason why 4AD chose the album for American release only—it was a way for American audiences to acquire some of the band's early work in lieu of re-issuing the entire back catalog. The album relies heavily on the early albums when HNIA were often described as a gothic folk band inspired by 4AD supergroup This Mortal Coil. Nearly all of the songs are from 1990's '' Livonia'', 1991's ''Home Is in Your Head'', and 1993's '' Mouth by Mouth''.
