Kineikonic Mode
The kineikonic mode is a term for the moving image as a multimodal form. It indicates an approach to the analysis of film, video, television and any instance of moving image media that examines how systems of signification such as image, speech, dramatic action, music and other communicative processes work together to create meaning within the spatial and temporal frames of filming and editing. Multimodality
Multimodality is the application of multiple literacies within one medium. For example, understanding a televised weather forecast (medium) involves understanding spoken language, written language, weather specific language (such as temperature scales), geography, and symbols (clouds, sun, rain, etc.). Multiple literacies or "modes" contribute to an audience's understanding of a composition. Everything from the placement of images to the organization of the content to the method of delivery creates meaning. This is the result of a shift from isolated text being relied on as the primary source of communication, to the image being utilized more frequently in the digital age. Film theory is a set of scholarly approaches within the academic discipline of film or cinema studies that began in the 1920s by questioning the formal essential attributes of motion pictures; and that now provides conceptual frameworks for understanding film's relationship to reality, the other arts, individual viewers, and society at large. Andrew Burn (professor)
Andrew Burn (born 1954) is an English professor and media theorist. He is best known for his work in the fields of media arts education, multimodality and play, and for the development of the theory of the Kineikonic Mode. He is a professor of English, Drama and Media at the UCL Institute of Education. Burn was also the director oReMAP a research collaboration with the British Film Institute. Early life and education Burn was born in Shifnal, England. His family lived in Darlington, before moving to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah in Malaysia, where his father was Dean of All Saints' Cathedral. He was educated at Christ's Hospital, and went on to study English at St John's College, Oxford, winning the Eugene Lee-Hamilton, Eugene Lee-Hamilton prize for the best Petrarchan sonnet in Oxford and Cambridge in 1975.
