Kinarut
Kinarut is a town in the state of Sabah, Malaysia. It is located about 20 kilometres south of the state capital, Kota Kinabalu, and Kinarut railway station is one of the stops on the Sabah State Railway. Kinarut is under the administration of the Papar District. Etymology Several theories exist as to the etymological origins of the name 'Kinarut'. One such theory is that it refers to a street in the town which was formerly called China Road. Another theory is that it originated from the Dusun word ''Kinorut'' which means 'cutting using a knife'. History Kinarut originally belonged to the Sultanate of Brunei. In the late 17th century, when Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin had to withdraw from Chermin Island (Pulau Chermin) during the Brunei Civil War, he built a base in Kinarut at a strategic location protected by two rivers. Kinarut Mansion
Kinarut Mansion (Malay: Rumah Besar Kinarut) is the ruins of a former manor house in the Graeco-Roman style near Kinarut in the Malaysian state of Sabah. History The building was built in 1910 by German W.F.C. Asimont. Asimont was the first manager of a rubber plantation known as ''Kinarut Rubber Estate'', where the British Society for Manchester North Borneo Ltd located. The plantation is the second largest after Sapong Estate's in the west coast of Sabah and was established in 1910–1911 with an area of more than ten square kilometres. Asimont died 1919 in Surabaya, Dutch East Indies and was buried in Singapore. Soon after, the abandoned house was destroyed by North Borneo Chartered Company authorities in 1923. On 22 August 1994, it was included as one of the historical sites in Sabah. In 2015, the area of the mansion is currently being upgraded to become one of Sabah's main tourism attractions. Papar District
The Papar District ( ms, Daerah Papar) is an administrative district in the Malaysian state of Sabah, part of the West Coast Division which includes the districts of Kota Belud, Kota Kinabalu, Papar, Penampang, Putatan, Ranau and Tuaran. The capital of the district is in Papar Town. Etymology The name 'Papar' comes from a Bruneian word meaning 'flat or open land'. History As with most of the west coast of Sabah, it was originally ruled by the Bruneian sultanate. Its first local leader was Datu Amir Bahar, of Bajau descent. It was then handed to Overbeck and Dent brothers in 1877 by the Sultanate of Brunei. The first British officer to serve in Papar was H.L. Sabah State Railway (SSR) is a railway system and operator in the state of Sabah in Malaysia. It is the only rail transport system operating on the island of Borneo. Brunei Civil War
The Brunei Civil War was a civil war fought in the Bruneian Empire from 1660 to 1673. Causes During the reign of the thirteenth Sultan Muhammad Ali, there was a disagreement between the son of the Sultan, ''Pengiran Muda'' ("prince") Bongsu and ''Pengiran Muda'' Alam, the son of ''Pengiran'' Abdul Mubin over the results of a cockfight which ''Pengiran Muda'' Bungsu lost. His defeat was jeered by ''Pengiran Muda'' Alam. In his rage, Bongsu killed ''Pengiran Muda'' Alam and escaped from the scene. In revenge, Abdul Hakkul Mubin and his followers garroted Sultan Muhammad Ali. Abdul Hakkul Mubin then made himself the fourteenth Sultan and took the title of "Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin". He tried to appease the previous Sultan's followers by appointing Muhammad Ali's grandson, Muhyiddin as the new ''Bendahara'' ("Chief Minister").
