Benny Golson
Benny Golson (born January 25, 1929) is an American bebop/hard bop jazz tenor saxophonist, composer, and arranger. He came to prominence with the big bands of Lionel Hampton and Dizzy Gillespie, more as a writer than a performer, before launching his solo career. Golson is known for co-founding and co-leading The Jazztet with trumpeter Art Farmer in 1959. From the late 1960s through the 1970s Golson was in demand as an arranger for film and television and thus was less active as a performer, but he and Farmer re-formed the Jazztet in 1982. In addition to " I Remember Clifford", many of Golson's compositions have become jazz standards including "Blues March", " Whisper Not", and "Killer Joe". ''Killer Joe'' is the second album by "Little" Jimmy Osmond, released in 1972 on MGM Records. The first single from this album, "Long Haired Lover from Liverpool", copyright Virgin Ear Music, reached #1 on the U.K. singles, making the then nine-year-old Osmond the youngest chart-topper in British charts history. Joe Lane (singer)
Joe Lane (21 March 1927 – 13 April 2007) was an Australian Bebop jazz vocalist based in Sydney. Born Keith Joseph Lane in Sydney, Australia, he first heard bebop whilst in the army in 1947. After leaving the army he studied with conductor and teacher of advanced harmony Roy Maling, and then introduced vocal bebop into Sydney clubs such as El Rocco, the Arabian, and the Mocambo. In 1949 he formed a vocal group with Ian Gunter, which worked at Sammy Lee's Club 47. He took on the stage name of Joe "Bebop" Lane. In the 1950s Lane led the Dee Jays, which singer Johnny O'Keefe later took over, and managed to secure jamming sessions with visiting Americans, including members of the Lionel Hampton and Stan Kenton bands. He also worked on the ''Cool for Cats'' TV show in Melbourne. 1968 saw Lane moving to New Zealand where he established his own jazz club/workshop in Auckland, presenting concerts and master-classes on the bebop vocal style. The Rocky Fellers
The Rocky Fellers were a Filipino-born pop/rock band discovered by Stanley Kahn in the 1960s, who signed them to Scepter Records. The group was composed of four Filipino brothers: Tony, Junior, Eddie and Albert Maligmat, and their father, Doroteo "Moro" Maligmat. They had a hit single called "Killer Joe", written by Bert Russell, Phil Medley, and Bob Elgin in 1963. The song was inspired by famed dance instructor and 'King of the Discothèque', Killer Joe Piro. "Killer Joe" reached number 16 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 in May 1963. They followed up with another Bob Elgin song called "Like the Big Guys Do", which peaked as high as number 55 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100. Among their other recordings was a Christmas novelty song, "Santa, Santa", written by a then-unknown songwriter, Neil Diamond. ''Killer Joe'' is a play written by Tracy Letts in 1993. Letts adapted the dark comedy into the movie ''Killer Joe'' in 2011. Productions The play was produced then premiered in 1993 at the Next Theatre Lab, in Evanston, Illinois, directed by Wilson Milam. After a successful run, ''Killer Joe'' was transferred to the Traverse Theatre at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The play gained positive reviews, and received the Fringe First award, given to new productions at the festival. The play then made its New York premiere Off-Off-Broadway by 29th Street Repertory in 1994. ''Killer Joe'' transferred to London on 16 January 1995 at the Bush Theatre. The limited run at the Bush Theatre was a sell out, and once again received rave reviews. After closing at the Bush Theatre, ''Killer Joe'' opened at the Vaudeville Theatre, London, for one year. ''Killer Joe'' is a 2011 American Southern Gothic black comedy crime psychological thriller directed by William Friedkin. The screenplay by Tracy Letts is based on his 1993 play of the same name. The film stars Matthew McConaughey in the title role, Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Gina Gershon and Thomas Haden Church. Friedkin and Letts had also collaborated on the 2006 film '' Bug''.
