Khulan Khatun
Khulan ( mn, ᠬᠤᠯᠠᠨ, Ppp=qulan; ; – ) was an empress consort of Genghis Khan and head of the second Court of Genghis Khan. Her status in the Mongol Empire was second only to Grand Empress Börte. Biography Khulan was a daughter of Dair-Usun, Uvas Mergid chief. She was offered to Genghis Khan as a gift after the chief's surrender. Genghis Khan was enamored with Khulan and following his coronation as Khan, installed her as an empress. She had a son, Gelejian, with Genghis Khan, and Gelejian's status was second only to Börte's four sons as he grew up. Khulan Chuluun ( mn, Чулууны Хулан; born May 30, 1985) is a Mongol actress and assistant director who first gained international notice as Börte, the wife of Genghis Khan, in the 2007 Oscar nominated Russian film ''Mongol''. Career Khulan was a student in 2006 hoping to join the country's military and enroll in a military school when she was discovered by Guka Omarova, the casting agent for ''Mongol'', while standing in a visa line at the Chinese embassy in Ulaanbaatar. Bodrov and Omarova had wanted to cast a Mongol woman as Genghis Khan's wife but with two weeks to go before filming they were uncertain about their choices. After meeting with her, Bodrov decided to take a risk on the non-professional actress and subsequently cast her in the role of Börte. Mongolian Wild Ass
The Mongolian wild ass (''Equus hemionus hemionus''), also known as Mongolian khulan, is the nominate subspecies of the onager. It is found in southern Mongolia and northern China. It was previously found in eastern Kazakhstan and southern Siberian Federal District, Siberia before being extirpated there through hunting. As of 2015, the Mongolian wild ass is listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN. Current population estimates are approximately 42,000 individuals in Mongolia and around 5,000 individuals in Northern China. Taxonomy and etymology The Mongolian wild ass is synonymous with the Gobi khulan (''Equus hemionus luteus''), also called the ''chigetai'', dziggetai or simply ', mn, Хулан.
