Kevin Lyons (judge)
Kevin Joseph Aloysius Lyons KC is an Australian judge and former barrister who has served on the Supreme Court of Victoria since May 2018, sitting in the Trial Division. Early life Lyons was born in Tasmania. He is the son of politician Kevin Lyons Sr., and the grandson of Prime Minister Joseph Lyons and his wife Enid. He moved to Melbourne at the age of five and completed his schooling at Xavier College. He subsequently studied arts and law at the University of Melbourne, majoring in classics. Lawyer Lyons served his articles of clerkship with Galbally & O'Brien. He worked as a solicitor at the firm for three years, then from 1993 as an associate to Justice David Harper. He was admitted to the bar in 1995, reading with Kim Hargrave. Lyons subsequently became a "leading commercial barrister". King's Counsel
In the United Kingdom and in some Commonwealth countries, a King's Counsel ( post-nominal initials KC) during the reign of a king, or Queen's Counsel (post-nominal initials QC) during the reign of a queen, is a lawyer (usually a barrister or advocate) who is typically a senior trial lawyer. Technically appointed by the monarch of the country to be one of 'His erMajesty's Counsel learned in the law', the position originated in England and Wales. Some Commonwealth countries have either abolished the position, or renamed it so as to remove monarchical connotations, for example, 'Senior counsel' or 'Senior Advocate'. Frank Galbally
Francis Eugene Joseph "Frank" Galbally (13 October 192212 October 2005) was an Australian criminal defence lawyer. Early life and education Galbally was born in 1922, the eighth of nine children of William Galbally and Eileen Cummins, who both came from Gippsland farming families. He was educated at St Patrick's College, East Melbourne. After leaving school at the age of 16, he initially trained to be a priest at Corpus Christi College, Melbourne from 1939 but after the events of Pearl Harbor joined the Navy. While he was in the Navy, Galbally played Australian rules football in the Victorian Football League with Jock McHale's Collingwood. He made just six appearances, all in the 1942 VFL season. A leg injury sustained with an axe while cutting wood left him in hospital for two months and ended his career. He then studied law at the University of Melbourne, where he resided at Newman College. Victorian Bar
The Victorian Bar is the bar association of the Australian State of Victoria. The current President of the Bar is Roisin Annesley KC. Its members are barristers registered to practice in Victoria. On 30 June 2020, there were 2,179 counsels practising as members of the Victorian Bar. Those who have been admitted to practice by the Supreme Court of Victoria, are eligible to join the Victorian Bar after sitting an entrance exam and completing a Bar readers' course. The Victorian Bar is affiliated with the Australian Bar Association and is a member of the Law Council of Australia.
