Kermit Junior High School
Kermit Independent School District is a public school district located in Kermit, Texas, United States that serves students in northeastern Winkler County and encompasses . The City of Kermit is located just under the southeast corner of New Mexico at the intersection of Texas State Highways 18, 115, and 302, and is approximately west of Odessa. The enrollment of the district was 1,235 at the beginning of the 2010–2011 school year. In 2009, the school district was rated "academically acceptable" by the Texas Education Agency. The district received national attention in January 2015 after a nine-year-old boy was controversially suspended because he "told a classmate he could make him disappear with a ring forged in fictional Middle Earth’s Mount Doom." The same boy had already been suspended on two previous occasions, which were also questioned by some in the public. Kermit, Texas
Kermit is a city in and the county seat of Winkler County, Texas, Winkler County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,708 at the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census. The city was named after Kermit Roosevelt following a visit by his father, President Theodore Roosevelt, to the county. History Establishment Kermit began as a convenient supply center for the scattered ranches of the area and became the seat of Winkler County when the county was organized in 1910. The first public school and the post office opened the same year. The town's namesake, Kermit Roosevelt, once visited the T Bar Ranch in northern Winkler County to hunt Pronghorn, antelope a few months before the town was named. Winkler County, Texas
Winkler County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 7,791. Its county seat is Kermit. The county was created in 1887 and organized in 1910. It is named for Clinton McKamy Winkler, a colonel in the Confederate Army. History The first people to live in the area of Winkler County were the Anasazi Indians, who migrated there about 900 AD and left their discarded pottery as evidence of their presence. These Native Americans were attracted to the area by its water, which was readily available from the interdunal ponds or from digging through to the shallow water table. State Highway 302 (SH 302) is a Texas state highway maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The route runs from U.S. Route 285 northwest of Pecos to Interstate 20 near Odessa. The route passes through Reeves, Loving, Winkler, and Ector counties. SH 302 has intersections with SH 115 and SH 18 in the Kermit area, and SH 158 east of Notrees. The route intersects Loop 338 and Spur 450 in West Odessa and then follows Loop 338 along the west side of Odessa until SH 302 terminates at I-20.
