Ken Cowan (AIDs Activist)
Ken Cowan (23 February 1955 – 11 November 1995) was a Scottish AIDS activist and founder/director of PHACE West, the project for HIV and Aids education in the West of Scotland. Biography Cowan was a left wing activist and founder member of the Scottish Labour Party. In the late seventies, he founded the Scottish Homosexual Rights Group (now Outright Scotland) to campaign for equal rights. In November 1994, Cowan set up PHACE West (Project for HIV/AIDS Care and Education) and with funding in 1995 conducted work in the West of Scotland. Cowan successfully lobbied that patients be included on the carers sub-committee at Ruchill Hospital and was instrumental in the success of the West of Scotland's awareness strategy for highlighting HIV prevention initiatives for gay men. HIV/AIDS
Human immunodeficiency virus infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) is a spectrum of conditions caused by infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), a retrovirus. Following initial infection an individual may not notice any symptoms, or may experience a brief period of influenza-like illness. Typically, this is followed by a prolonged incubation period with no symptoms. If the infection progresses, it interferes more with the immune system, increasing the risk of developing common infections such as tuberculosis, as well as other opportunistic infections, and tumors which are rare in people who have normal immune function. PHACE West
Project for HIV and AIDS Care and Education (PHACE) West was Scottish HIV and AIDS awareness organisation that was active in the West of Scotland between 1995 and 2006. History PHACE West was founded in November 1994 by Ken Cowan following changes in the Scottish HIV voluntary sector, and the following year attracted funding from four West of Scotland health boards. There was a widespread perception of an East Coast bias in the management of the predominant Scottish AIDS organisation Scottish AIDS Monitor, and inadequate West Coast services. A number of SAM staff joined PHACE West, including its director Maureen Moore (AIDS activist). The new organisation had a high-profile launch party in May 1995 at Glasgow's Tunnel nightclub, featuring a performance by Dannii Minogue. Outright Scotland is an LGBT rights organisation based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Founded as the Scottish Minorities Group in 1969, it was the country's first LGBT rights organisation. History The Scottish Minorities Group (SMG) was a Scottish gay rights group officially founded in Glasgow on 9 May 1969. The group was a self-help organisation working for the rights of homosexual men and women, and had the aims of providing counselling, working for law reform and providing meeting places for lesbians and gay men. Ruchill Hospital
Ruchill Hospital was a fever hospital in the Ruchill area of Glasgow, Scotland. The hospital was closed in 1998 and was sold to Scottish Enterprise in July 1999. It was managed by NHS Greater Glasgow. __TOC__ History In 1891 when the boundaries of Glasgow were extended to include Ruchill and Maryhill, the Glasgow Corporation purchased of land there for a public park, golf course and for the city's second fever hospital, to create the additional capacity beyond that already provided at Belvidere Hospital in Parkhead. Ruchill Hospital was designed by the City Engineer, Alexander B. McDonald in a Neo Jacobean style, largely using red brick dressed with red sandstone ashlar. McDonald was responsible for a number of civic projects in the city from 1890 to 1914, the most notable being the People's Palace. Body positivity is a social movement focused on the acceptance of all bodies, regardless of size, shape, skin tone, gender, and physical abilities, while challenging present-day beauty standards as an undesirable social construct. Gay Scotland
''Gay Scotland'' was an LGBT magazine created by the gay rights organisation, the Scottish Homosexual Rights Group (SHRG). The magazine grew out of SHRG's internal newsletter and its first issue was published in March 1982. The magazine was originally edited by Ian Dunn who remained as editor for several years. The magazine was an important source of information for LGBT readers across Scotland. Through the HIV/AIDS epidemic it provided its readers with contemporary debates around HIV and AIDS, to keep them informed on latest healthcare developments and to debunk myths. As the first publication of its kind in Scotland, ''Gay Scotland'' went on to inspire future publications produced specifically for the LGBT community.
