Kehrsatz
Kehrsatz is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. History Kehrsatz is first mentioned in 1281 as ''Kersaz''. The oldest trace of a settlement in the area are some La Tène graves which were discovered under Zimmerwaldstrasse 27. During the Roman era there was a well developed village of Gallo-Roman farm houses at the Maygut - Breitenacker area. A horde of Roman coins was also discovered in the Gurtental. By the Middle Ages the village was part of the Belp-Montenach ''Herrschaft''. By the 13th century a number of Bernese nobles and local monasteries owned pieces of the village and surrounding farms. Gradually, Bern acquired a majority of rights in Kehrsatz and by the 15th century had the low court right over the village. Kehrsatz Castle
Kehrsatz Castle (german: Schlössli Kehrsatz) is a castle in the Kehrsatz, municipality of Kehrsatz of the canton of Bern in Switzerland. History The castle was built in the late 16th century. In 1795 Emanuel von Tscharner purchased it from the family of General Karl Hackbrett. The Tscharner family already owned two other estates in Kehrsatz, Lohn Estate and Blumenhof. The French invasion of Switzerland#Collapse, 1798 French invasion and creation of the Helvetic Republic reduced the political power of the local Patrician (post-Roman Europe), patricians, but the Tscharner family retained ownership of all three estates. However, over the following years, the estates were inherited by various members of the family and eventually sold. Bern-Mittelland (administrative District)
Bern-Mittelland District in the Canton of Bern was created on 1 January 2010. It is part of the Bern-Mittelland administrative region, and is the only district in the region. It contains 75 municipalities with an area of and a population () of . It is made up of the valley of the rivers Aare and Emme, some of the foothills of the Bernese Alps, as well as the plain around the capital Bern, and has many small farms and hilly forested regions with small to mid-sized towns scattered throughout. It is perhaps best known by foreigners and visitors for the Emmental. The classic Swiss cheese with holes Emmentaler comes from this region's forests and pastures, of hilly and low mountainous countryside in the range. Wald, Bern
Wald is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. History In January 2004 it incorporated the two independent municipalities of Zimmerwald and Englisberg. *Englisberg, population: 201 *Zimmerwald, population: 870 Englisberg is first mentioned in 1166 as ''Endlisperc''. Zimmerwald was first mentioned in 1296 as ''Zymmerwalt''. Until 1902 it was officially known as ''Obermuhlern und Zimmerwald''. Englisberg Englisberg first appears in a historic record with the Kyburg Ministerialis (unfree knights in the service of a feudal overlord) family of Englisberg. Muri bei Bern is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. History Muri is first mentioned in 1180 as ''Mure'' while Gümligen appears in 1239 as ''Gumelingen'' or ''Gumlingin'' Archaeological finds at Schlosshügel, unearthed in 1832, show that Muri was already settled in the era of the Roman Empire. The earliest documentary evidence for the name was in 1180 when a clergyman named Burkhard made transactions with wealthy residents. At that time Muri belonged to the dominion of Geristein, which in 1298 was conquered by the city of Bern. The holdings consisted of the four so-called parishes Bolligen, Muri, Stettlen, and Vechigen. Köniz
Köniz (, ) is a statistical town, however considers itself still as a village, and a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district right on the southern border to Bern in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. The municipality of Köniz as a single settlement would belong to the 15 most populous towns in Switzerland. It is also part of the larger agglomeration of Bern of about 400,000 inhabitants. The official language of Köniz is (the Swiss variety of Standard) German, but the main spoken language is the local variant of the Alemannic Swiss German dialect. History The current municipality has long been inhabited; there have been a number of Bronze- and Iron Age finds, as well as Roman villas (''villae rusticae'') and Early Middle Ages graveyards. Gurten (mountain)
The Gurten is a mountain situated just to the south of Bern, the capital city of Switzerland. It is high, and the summit yields views of Bern, of the Jura mountains and of the Alps. Facilities on the Gurten include a hotel, restaurants, a viewing tower and a children's playground. Winter sports facilities are available in winter. The Gurtenfestival, a music festival, is held every year in the middle of July. The Gurten is accessible on foot, or by the Gurten Funicular from Wabern. Wabern can itself be reached from central Bern by tram, train or car. Wabern bei Bern station, on lines S3 and S31 of the Bern S-Bahn, is adjacent to the lower station of the funicular, as is the Gurtenbahn stop on Bern tramway route 9. The castle site of Aegerten lies a good to the south-east of the Gurten summit. Suburb
A suburb (more broadly suburban area) is an area within a metropolitan area, which may include commercial and mixed-use, that is primarily a residential area.
