Kawai K1
The Kawai K1 is a 61 key synthesizer manufactured in 1988 by Kawai. It is an entry-level and low fidelity synthesizer and not as feature rich as the Kawai K4 and was released to compete with the Roland D50 and Korg M1 synthesizers. The patch memory can be doubled with a DC-8 memory card which was available separately. Features The K1 features 256 8-bit PCM waveforms (204 additive waveforms and 52 acoustic samples), AM (Ring modulation), and a 16×2 character LCD. Modes The four modes of operation are: * Mono * Polyphonic * Split * Unison Percussion The K1 includes drum kits and sounds (acoustic and electronic kits, cymbals as well as some tuned percussion), so can be used to create full rhythm backing when sequenced. It is best known for its grand pianos, upright pianos, digital pianos, electronic keyboards and electronic synthesizers. The company was founded in August 1927. History Koichi Kawai, the company founder, was born in Hamamatsu, Japan in 1886. His neighbor, Torakusu Yamaha, a watchmaker and reed organ builder, took him in as an apprentice. Kawai became a member of the research and development team that introduced pianos to Japan. Yamaha died in 1916, and in the 1920s the piano industry faltered in Japan. New management took over control of Yamaha's company, Nippon Gakki Co. (later renamed the Yamaha Corporation), and began to diversify its production line. This led Kawai to leave Nippon Gakki in 1927 and found the Kawai Musical Instrument Research Laboratory. Lab 4
Lab 4 is a U.K. based hard trance act that was formed in 1994 by Adam Newman and Lez Elston. Newman and Elston had previously worked together in the industrial act M.A.D. Shortly after forming, the duo were asked to perform at Club UK, a nightclub that had previously played host to DJs such as Carl Cox and Laurent Garnier. They later played at London fetish club Torture Garden and have since played at the Brixton Academy, Global Gathering 2005 and at Infest in 2006. Lab 4 were regularly played on Radio 1 by John Peel who also invited Lab 4 to launch their third album ''Virus'' on one of his 'John Peel Session' at Maida Vale. Lab 4's track "Born In The Sky" (vocal by Les Elston) also appeared on the Reebok television advert for their DMX trainer. This was amongst many other 'music to picture' assignments. LFO (British Band)
LFO was a British electronic music act formed in 1988 consisting of Mark Bell and Gez Varley. They released their acclaimed debut LP ''Frequencies'' in 1991 on Sheffield label Warp. After Varley left the group in 1996, Bell continued solo to release ''Advance'' (1996) and '' Sheath'' (2003). Bell died in October 2014, effectively ending the project. LFO are considered to be pioneers of the bass-heavy " bleep techno" style. AllMusic called them "one of British techno's most important, agenda-setting groups." EMF are an English alternative rock band from Cinderford, Gloucestershire, who came to prominence at the beginning of the 1990s. During their initial eight-year run, from 1989 to 1997, the band released three studio albums before a hiatus. Drexciya
Drexciya was an American electronic music duo from Detroit, Michigan, consisting of James Stinson (1969–2002) and Gerald Donald. Career The majority of Drexciya's releases were in the style of dance-floor oriented electro, punctuated with elements of retro and 1980s Detroit techno, with occasional excursions into the ambient and industrial genres. They had 3 releases on the highly influential Underground Resistance Detroit record label. Tracks were mostly centered around the Roland TR-808 drum machine. Drexciya, which eschewed media attention and its attendant focus on personality, developed a nautical afrofuturist myth. The group revealed in the sleeve notes to their 1997 album ''The Quest'' that "Drexciya" was an underwater country populated by the unborn children of pregnant African women who were thrown off of slave ships; the babies had adapted to breathe underwater in their mothers' wombs. Cirrus were an American big beat group formed in 1995 in Los Angeles, California, United States. The group was composed of Aaron Carter and Stephen James Barry. In live performances, the group often added live instrumentation such as guitar and bass to the electronic background. Their single "Superstar DJ" brought them mainstream exposure, and in 1997 they released their debut album on Moonshine Music. They scored several dance hits in the US and Canada over the next five years. Bile is an American industrial metal project based in New York City. Although there have been many different members throughout the band's career, Krztoff is the songwriting, recording and conceptual leader. The group has performed with as many as 11 and as small as two people on stage. The early shows in 1993–95 New York included a dominatrix and fire-breather. History Beginning in December 1992 Bile began as an art project. Ring Modulation
In electronics, ring modulation is a signal processing function, an implementation of frequency mixing, in which two signals are combined to yield an output signal. One signal, called the carrier, is typically a sine wave or another simple waveform; the other signal is typically more complicated and is called the input or the modulator signal. A ring modulator is an electronic device for ring modulation. A ring modulator may be used in music synthesizers and as an effects unit.
