Albert Kautz
Rear Admiral Albert Kautz (January 29, 1839 – February 6, 1907) was an officer of the United States Navy who served during and after the American Civil War. Biography Kautz was born in Georgetown, Ohio, one of seven children of Johann George and Dorothy Kautz. When a child, his family moved to Levanna, where they farmed, growing grapes and tobacco. Kautz entered the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, on September 28, 1854, and graduated with the rank of midshipman on June 11, 1858. He was promoted to passed midshipman on January 28, 1861, to master on February 28, then to lieutenant on April 21, 1861, soon after the start of the Civil War. Kautz served aboard the steamer , on blockade off Savannah, Georgia. On June 20, 1861, ''Flag'' captured the Confederate blockade runner ''Hannah Balch'', and Kautz was given command of the prize, and ordered to take her to Philadelphia. August Kautz
August Valentine Kautz (January 5, 1828 – September 4, 1895) was a German-American officer. He served as a general in the Union Army, Union cavalry during the American Civil War. He was the author of several army manuals on duties and customs eventually adopted by the U.S. military. Early life and career Born in Ispringen, Baden, Germany, Kautz immigrated with his parents to Brown County, Ohio in 1832. He later enlisted as a Private (rank), Private in the 1st Ohio Infantry, serving in the Mexican–American War from 1846 to 1847. Entering the United States Military Academy following the war, Kautz graduated in the class of 1852. He primarily served at Fort Steilacoom in the Pacific Northwest, where he was wounded twice with the U.S. 4th Infantry Regiment, 4th U.S. Infantry during Rogue River Wars with Indians along the Rogue River (Oregon), Rogue River in 1855, and also served in the Puget Sound War in 1856. Christian Kautz (born 23 November 1913 – died on 4 July 1948) was an auto racing driver from Switzerland. Son of a Swiss multi-millionaire, his career started with Mercedes-Benz as a junior driver in 1936, then as an Auto Union junior driver in 1938, starting in three Grands Prix. Kautz was a testpilot for Lockheed in the United States during the Second World War. He died at only 34 years of age in a fatal accident in a Maserati at the 1948 Swiss Grand Prix in Bremgarten. Jacob Kautz
Jacob Kautz (also Jakob Kautz) (c. 1500 – c. 1532) was an Anabaptist who posted seven theses to the door of the Worms Cathedral in 1527. He undermined the authority of the church with accusations of idolatry. In essence, he took Martin Luther's protest to the logical conclusion that individual freedom of conscience should be enshrined in law. The protest claimed that by baptising infants (and by indoctrinating children with church customs), the church was suppressing individual free will. Thus, church supporters were not acting on any decision of their own but merely because they were given no other choice. A soul cannot be saved by force, but only by moral persuasion that leads to a conscious decision to embrace salvation. Baptism must be willingly chosen by an adult who understands the meaning of the act. Gyula Kautz (5 November 1829 – 27 March 1909) was a notable Hungarian economist. The Faculty of Economics at the Széchenyi István University holds his name. Education Born in Győr, he started his University studies at the Royal Academy of Philosophy at Győr. After two academic years, he moved to Pest to study at the University of Pest, where he earned his doctorate in law in 1850. He then went on to study abroad for a year, visiting universities of Berlin, Heidelberg and Leipzig. He was influenced by the English classical school of Economics, and also by Wilhelm Roscher, then a professor at Leipzig, a representative of the German historian school. Kautz Creek is a tributary of the Nisqually River, flowing from the Kautz Glacier, with its watershed in the Mount Rainier National Park of Washington. It drains southwest from Mount Rainier for about before it joins the Nisqually River near Mount Rainier Highway. It is notable for being a severe flooding hazard due to the volume of summer glacier melt and its frequently changing course. The Kautz Glacier is a narrow glacier on the southern flank of Mount Rainier in Washington. Named for August Kautz, who is sometimes credited for the first ascent of Mount Rainier, covers and contains 7.8 billion ft3 (221 million m3) of ice.
