Katzhütte is a municipality in the district Saalfeld-Rudolstadt, in Thuringia, Germany. Geography The municipality Katzhütte is the centre of the upper Schwarza valley. History The borders of the present day town were formed in 1950 by the consolidation of Katzhütte and Oelze into a single large municipality. At its founding there were about 3800 inhabitants, but following consolidation the number of inhabitants has dramatically decreased. By 2020 there were only 1,291 citizens remaining. Saalfeld-Rudolstadt is a ''Kreis'' (district) in the south of Thuringia, Germany. Neighboring districts are (from the north clockwise) the districts Weimarer Land, Saale-Holzland, Saale-Orla, the district Kronach in Bavaria, and the districts Sonneberg, Hildburghausen and Ilm-Kreis. History The district dates back to the ''Landratsamt'' Saalfeld, which was created in 1868, and in 1922 it was converted into the ''Landkreis''. Also in 1922 the district Rudolstadt was created, the second historical root of the district as of today. Both districts were merged in the communal reform of 1994. Geography The main rivers in the district is the Saale. The highest elevation is 827 m above sea level near Piesau, the lowest with 169 m is in the Saale river valley near Niederkrossen. Schwarza (Saale)
The Schwarza is a left tributary of the Saale in Thuringia, Germany. The Schwarza is long. Its source is in the Thuringian Forest, near Neuhaus am Rennweg. It flows into the Saale in Rudolstadt. Other towns on the Schwarza are Schwarzburg and Bad Blankenburg. It has 50 tributaries, the largest being the Lichte, the Sorbitz, the Werre and the Rinne. Its name, meaning "black river", comes from its dark colour in its upper course and the thick forest which originally overshadowed the narrow valley. The Schwarza valley (german: Schwarzatal) parallels the axis of the Schwarzburg anticline (''Schwarzburger Sattel''), a structure that divides the Thuringian forest to the northwest from the Thuringian Highland to the southeast.
