Katherine Waddell
Katherine Brooks Waddell (born June 16, 1938) is a Virginia politician who served in the Virginia House of Delegates, representing the 68th district, which includes portions of the Richmond, Virginia, City of Richmond and Chesterfield County, Virginia, Chesterfield County. She was actively involved in Republican Party (United States), Republican politics for a number of years, including stints working for Eddy Dalton, Jim Gilmore, and John H. Hager and serving on the Central Committee of the Republican Party of Virginia. She became disillusioned with the party due to its rightward shift on social issues and resigned from her official positions in the party in 2001 to support the campaign of an Independent politician, independent state house candidate. A strong proponent of abortion rights, she remained on the national board of the Republican Majority for Choice. The Republican Majority for Choice (RMC) was a Republican organization in the United States dedicated to preserving legal access to abortion. The group also supported federal funding for all kinds of stem cell research, including embryonic stem cell research. RMC had a political action committee and supported Republicans across the country who favored abortion rights. The group closed operations in 2018. The name was chosen to emphasize information based on polling that consistently shows that a majority of Republicans support legal access to abortion in at least some circumstances. The Virginia General Assembly is the legislative body of the Commonwealth of Virginia, the oldest continuous law-making body in the Western Hemisphere, the first elected legislative assembly in the New World, and was established on July 30, 1619.
