Kasugayama Kofun Cluster (Ōtsu)
The is a group of Kofun to early Nara period burial mound located between the Manotaniguchi neighborhood of the city of Ōtsu, Shiga in the Kansai region of Japan. A portion of this tumuli cluster was designated a National Historic Site of Japan in 1974. Overview The Kasugayama Kofun Cluster is located on a ridge with an elevation of 160 meters, overlooking Lake Biwa and the Katata Plain near Mount Kasuga, approximately one kilometer west of the JR West Katata Station. The Mano District, where these tumuli are located, was controlled during the Kofun period by the Wani clan, a powerful clan based in what is now Tenri, Nara, and it be believed that these tombs are those of various members of that clan. The site was investigated by the Shiga Prefectural Board of Education in 1968, at which time a total of 171 tumuli were recorded, and which were divided into Group A through Group E. Grave Goods
Grave goods, in archaeology and anthropology, are the items buried along with the body. They are usually personal possessions, supplies to smooth the deceased's journey into the afterlife or offerings to the gods. Grave goods may be classed as a type of votive deposit. Most grave goods recovered by archaeologists consist of inorganic objects such as pottery and stone and metal tools but organic objects that have since decayed were also placed in ancient tombs. The grave goods were to be useful to the deceased in the afterlife; therefore their favorite foods or everyday objects were left with them. Often times social status played a role in what was left and how often it was left. Funerary art is a broad term but generally means artworks made specifically to decorate a burial place, such as miniature models of possessions including slaves or servants for "use" in the afterlife. Burial Chamber
A chamber tomb is a tomb for burial used in many different cultures. In the case of individual burials, the chamber is thought to signify a higher status for the interred than a simple grave. Built from rock or sometimes wood, the chambers could also serve as places for storage of the dead from one family or social group and were often used over long periods for multiple burials. Most the chamber tombs were constructed from large stones or megaliths and covered by cairns, barrows or earth. Zenpō-kōen-fun
Zenpokoenfun is an architectural model of Japanese ancient tombs (Kofun), which consists of a square front part () and a circular back part (). The part connecting the two is called the middle part (), which looks like a keyhole when viewed from above. Therefore, they are also called keyhole-shaped mounds in English, and in Korean, they are called long drum tombs () due to their resemblance to Janggu, and it is also a form of the Kofun that appeared earlier in the Kofun period along with the circular-type ('' Enfun''). Katata Station
is a passenger railway station located in the city of Ōtsu, Shiga Prefecture, Japan, operated by the West Japan Railway Company (JR West).
