Kaslo And Slocan Railway
The Kaslo and Slocan Railway (K&S) is a historic railway that operated in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The K&S connected Kaslo and Sandon. Initially a narrow-gauge railway, the line was later rebuilt to standard gauge. Narrow gauge Proposal The 1891 discovery of silver in the Slocan Range created a mining boom. A railway to transport ore was crucial for commercial mining. In 1892, the province issued the charter to promoter John Hendry for a standard gauge line, amended to narrow gauge in 1894. Planned was a western terminal at Cody, with a spur to Sandon. The May 1893 stock market collapse and drop in the silver price depressed the economy, which delayed construction and prompted the narrow gauge decision. This choice halved construction costs. West Kootenay
The Kootenays or Kootenay ( ) is a region of southeastern British Columbia. It takes its name from the Kootenay River, which in turn was named for the Kutenai First Nations people. Boundaries The Kootenays are more or less defined by the Kootenay Land District, though some variation exists in terms of what areas are or are not a part. An avalanche is a rapid flow of snow down a slope, such as a hill or mountain. Avalanches can be set off spontaneously, by such factors as increased precipitation or snowpack weakening, or by external means such as humans, animals, and earthquakes. Primarily composed of flowing snow and air, large avalanches have the capability to capture and move ice, rocks, and trees. Avalanches occur in two general forms, or combinations thereof: slab avalanches made of tightly packed snow, triggered by a collapse of an underlying weak snow layer, and loose snow avalanches made of looser snow. Nashton, British Columbia
Nashton is a ghost town in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The location is about west of Kaslo on Highway 31A, at the confluence of Keen Creek and the Kaslo River. Prior names were Nashville, South Fork and Zwicky. 1892 subdivision Like other speculative endeavours, the town was promoted as being on the coming Kaslo and Slocan Railway. Companies like the Great Northern Railway usually bypassed such places at the time of construction. In 1892, John Keen auctioned the 274 lots, but their being deserted in 1895 indicates buyer interest. He named Nashville after his bride-to-be, Sarah Helena Nash Twiss. The Nashville Hotel at South Fork operated 1897–1902. South Fork, the name of the nearest railway stop, was also known as Nashville Siding. Rosebery, British Columbia
Rosebery is an unincorporated community about north of New Denver in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The former steamboat landing and ferry terminal is at the mouth of Wilson Creek on the eastern shore of Slocan Lake. The locality, on BC Highway 6, is about by road north of Castlegar and by road and ferry south of Revelstoke. Name origin Wilson Creek, the former name, came from the creek flowing through the hamlet. The naming honoured either John Wilson, a resident until about 1902, or Arthur M. Wilson, the Slocan's first justice of the peace, who staked land at the creek in 1891, and left in the late 1890s. The Slocan Trading and Navigation Co. (ST&N) steamboat ''Wm. Nakusp
The Village of Nakusp (Sinixt ''neqo'sp'') is beside the mouth of Kuskanax Creek, on the Upper Arrow Lake in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. Lying between the Selkirk and Monashee ranges, the village is known for its nearby hot springs and picturesque mountain lakeside setting. First Nations peoples and European explorers The Secwepemc, Sinixt and Ktunaxa peoples occupied the region for thousands of years. In 1811, Finan McDonald, a member of David Thompson's party, was the first reported European explorer on the Arrow Lakes. The settlement name came from the Nakusp Creek to the south. Track ballast forms the trackbed upon which railroad ties (sleepers) are laid. It is packed between, below, and around the ties. It is used to bear the load from the railroad ties, to facilitate drainage of water, and also to keep down vegetation that might interfere with the track structure. Retallack, British Columbia
Retallack is on the north side of the Kaslo River, west of the junction with Whitewater Creek, in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The settlement, on Highway 31A, is about northwest of Kaslo and northeast of New Denver. Bell family In the early 1890s, the place was called Bell's Camp, The Bells, Bellsville, or some variation of the latter. James (Jim) Bell, and his sons John Warren Bell, and James Allan Ward Bell, operated a sawmill and were prospectors and miners. When the Kaslo and Slocan Railway opened in 1895, the siding was called Whitewater Creek or The Bells. The creek was named after the mine. In 1891, prospectors Eli Carpenter and J.L. Zincton, British Columbia
Zincton is a ghost town in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. This former mining community, on BC Highway 31A, is by road about northeast of New Denver and northwest of Kaslo. Name origin and railways In 1892, cabin accommodation and a blacksmith shop were built. The location was originally known as Lucky Jim, because the only inhabitants were mine employees. Opening in 1895, the Kaslo and Slocan Railway (K&S), controlled by the Great Northern Railway (GN), passed adjacent to the mine. The cabin was a 30-minute walk from the K&S Lucky Jim siding, which existed by 1897. The official flag stop, established by 1908, was northeast of McGuigan and southwest of Bear Lake.
