Karuna Banerjee
Karuna Banerjee ( bn, করুণা ব্যানার্জী) (25 December 1919 – 13 November 2001) was a Bengali actress best known for her role in Satyajit Ray's ''The Apu Trilogy'' (1955–1959) as the long suffering mother, Sarbajaya. She was nominated for Best Actress at the 1959 BAFTA Awards for her performance in ''Aparajito'' (1956), the second part of ''The Apu Trilogy''. She appeared in a number of other films after that, including Ray's '' Devi'' (1960) and ''Kanchenjungha'' (1962). Early life She graduated from the Jogamaya Devi College, an affiliated women's college of the University of Calcutta. Acting career Banerjee's acting career expanded over more than two decades in Bengali cinema and theatre. ''Pather Panchali'' (; ) is a 1955 Indian Bengali-language drama film written and directed by Satyajit Ray and produced by the Government of West Bengal. It is an adaptation of Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay's 1929 Bengali novel of the same name, and marked Ray's directorial debut. Featuring Subir Banerjee, Kanu Banerjee, Karuna Banerjee, Uma Dasgupta, Pinaki Sengupta, Chunibala Devi and being the first film in ''The Apu Trilogy'', ''Pather Panchali'' depicts the childhood travails of the protagonist Apu and his elder sister Durga amidst the harsh village life of their poor family. Production was interrupted because of funding problems and it took nearly three years for the film to be completed. Jogamaya Devi College is one of the oldest and leading women's colleges in Kolkata, India. Sombhu Mitra (22 August 1915 – 19 May 1997) was an Indian film and stage actor, director, playwright, reciter and an Indian theatre personality, known especially for his involvement in Bengali theatre, where he is considered a pioneer. He remained associated with the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) for a few years before founding the ''Bohurupee'' theatre group in Kolkata in 1948. He is most noted for films like ''Dharti Ke Lal'' (1946), ''Jagte Raho'' (1956), and his production of ''Rakta Karabi'' based on Rabindranath Tagore's play in 1954 and ''Chand Baniker Pala'', his most noted play as a playwright. Ritwik Kumar Ghatak (; 4 November 19256 February 1976) was a noted Indian film director, screenwriter, and playwright. Along with prominent contemporary Bengali filmmakers Satyajit Ray, Tapan Sinha and Mrinal Sen, his cinema is primarily remembered for its meticulous depiction of social reality, partition and feminism. He won the National Film Award's Rajat Kamal Award for Best Story in 1974 for his ''Jukti Takko Aar Gappo'' and Best Director's Award from Bangladesh Cine Journalist's Association for ''Titash Ekti Nadir Naam''.
