The South Caucasian nation of Georgia is home to several protected areas, which receive protection because of their environmental, cultural or similar value. The oldest of these – now known as the Lagodekhi Protected Areas – dates back to 1912, when Georgia was part of the Russian Empire. Ninotsminda Municipality
Ninotsminda ( ka, ნინოწმინდის მუნიციპალიტეტი, ''Ninots’mindis munitsip’alit’et’i'') is a municipality in southern Georgia, in the region of Samtskhe-Javakheti with an area of and a population of 18,944 (2021). Its main town and administrative center is Ninotsminda, which was granted the status of a city in 1983. Until 1917, the territory of the district was included in Akhalkalaki Mazra of Tbilisi (Georgia), and between 1917 and 1930 in Akhalkalaki Mazra. It has been a separate district since 1930, under the name Bogdanovka. Bugdasheni Managed Reserve ( ka, ბუღდაშენის ტბის აღკვეთილი) is a protected area in Ninotsminda Municipality in Samtskhe-Javakheti region of Georgia. It protects Bugdasheni Lake on the south-eastern part of the volcanic Javakheti Plateau, at an altitude of 2042 m above sea level. Bugdasheni Lake ecosystem is undergoing restoration. Since 2020 it has been designated as a Ramsar site. Madatapa Managed Reserve ( ka, მადათაფის ტბის აღკვეთილი) is a protected area in Ninotsminda Municipality in Samtskhe-Javakheti region of Georgia. It protects Madatapa Lake situated in the south-eastern part of the volcanic Javakheti Plateau, at an altitude of 2108 m above sea level. Madatapa Managed Reserve is part of ''Javakheti Protected Areas'' which also includes Javakheti National Park, Kartsakhi Managed Reserve, Sulda Managed Reserve, Khanchali Managed Reserve, Bugdasheni Managed Reserve. Fauna Madatapa Lake is one of the most important in Georgia for breeding and staging waterbirds such as the endangered Dalmatian pelican.
