The Faroe Islands ( ), or simply the Faroes ( fo, Føroyar ; da, Færøerne ), are a North Atlantic island group and an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. Republic ( fo, Tjóðveldi), formerly known as the Republican Party ( fo, Tjóðveldisflokkurin) is a left-wing political party on the Faroe Islands committed to Faroese independence. History The party was founded in 1948 as a reaction to the islands failing to gain independence despite the outcome of the 1946 independence referendum, after which independence was subsequently declared but annulled by the Danish King. In 1998, Høgni Hoydal succeeded Heini O. Heinesen as party leader. During the 20 January 2004 legislative elections, the party won 21.7% of the popular vote and 8 out of 33 seats. The Centre Party ( fo, Miðflokkurin) is a Christian democratic, conservative political party on the Faroe Islands, led by Jenis av Rana. Anfinn Kallsberg (born 19 November 1947) is a Faroese politician, former prime minister, and the former leader of the People's Party ( fo, italic=yes, Fólkaflokkurin). First elected to the Faroese parliament in 1980 and consecutively since then, Kallsberg served as Fisheries Minister from 1983 to 1985 and for 5 months in Jógvan Sundstein's first coalition government in 1989, and as Economics and Finance Minister from 1996 to 1998 in a coalition led by Edmund Joensen ( Union Party). Jóannes Dan Eidesgaard (born 19 April 1951) is a former Faroese politician. He was the Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands from 2004, starting shortly after the general election of 20 January 2004, until 26 September 2008, when a new coalition took office. She finished her education as a nurse in 1994 and as a nurse in neonatalalogy in 1998 and as a nurse with special knowledge of children from 0-7 (''Heilsufrøðingur'' in Faroese, ''Sundhedsplejerske'' in Danish, a health care visitor who attends to and gives advice to the mothers and their small children in their homes).
