Sirið Stenberg
Sirið Stenberg (born 26 May 1968 in Vágur) is a Faroese politician. She finished her education as a nurse in 1994 and as a nurse in neonatalalogy in 1998 and as a nurse with special knowledge of children from 0-7 (''Heilsufrøðingur'' in Faroese, ''Sundhedsplejerske'' in Danish, a health care visitor who attends to and gives advice to the mothers and their small children in their homes). Since 2001 she has worked in the children's health care in Suðuroy. She took leave from this employment shortly after assuming office as a member of the Faroese parliament, the parliament is located in Tórshavn, two hours away by ferry from Suðuroy. From 2006-08 she was head master of the Health School of the Faroe Islands, which is located in Suðuroy. Løgting
The Løgting (pronounced ; da, Lagtinget) is the unicameral parliament of the Faroe Islands, an autonomous territory within the Danish Realm. The name literally means "''Law Thing''"—that is, a law assembly—and derives from Old Norse ''lǫgþing'', which was a name given to ancient assemblies. A ''ting'' or ''þing'' has existed on the Faroe Islands for over a millennium and the Løgting was the highest authority on the islands in the Viking era. From 1274 to 1816 it functioned primarily as a judicial body, whereas the modern Løgting established in 1852 is a parliamentary assembly, which gained legislative power when home rule was introduced in 1948. The Manx Tynwald and the Icelandic Alþing are the two other modern parliaments with ties back to the old Norse assemblies of Europe. 2011 Faroese General Election
Early general elections were held in the Faroe Islands on 29 October 2011. Faroese law states that new elections must be held at least once every four years; however, either the Prime Minister (''Løgmaður'') or a majority of the members of the Faroese Parliament (the ''Løgting'') may call an election before the end of this period. The previous elections having been held on 20 January 2008, the latest date on which the next elections could have been held was 19 January 2012. However, the Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands, Kaj Leo Johannesen, announced on 27 September 2011 that elections would be held on 29 October 2011. He gave no particular reason for his decision.
