Cinema Of Karnataka
Kannada cinema, also known as Sandalwood, or Chandanavana, is the segment of Indian cinema dedicated to the production of motion pictures in the Kannada language widely spoken in the state of Karnataka. The 1934 film ''Sati Sulochana'' directed by Y. V. Rao was the first talkie film in the Kannada language. It was also the first film starring Subbaiah Naidu and Tripuramba, and was the first motion picture screened in the erstwhile Mysore Kingdom. The film was produced by Chamanlal Doongaji, who in 1932 founded ''South India Movietone'' in Bangalore. Major literary works have been adapted to the Kannada screen such as B. V. ''Kallarali Hoovagi'' ( kn, ಕಲ್ಲರಳಿ ಹೂವಾಗಿ) is a 2006 Indian Kannada historical drama romance film directed by T. S. Nagabharana, based on a novel of the same name written by B. L. Venu. Set in 1772, during the reign of Madakari Nayaka, the last ruler of Chitradurga, it features a fictitious love story between a Hindu Veerashaiva boy and a Muslim girl. The film stars Vijay Raghavendra, Umashankari, Anant Nag, Bharathi, Ambareesh, Avinash. At the 54th National Film Awards, the film won Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration. Nagamandala
Nagamandala (; ) is a 1997 Indian Kannada-language drama film, directed by T. S. Nagabharana based on a play of same name by Girish Karnad. It was produced by Srihari L. Khoday and the music was scored by C. Aswath. It is an adaptation of a 1988 play by Karnad with the same name which is based on a local folk tale and ritual. It stars Prakash Raj and Vijayalakshmi in the lead roles. The film depicts a romantic plot between a woman and a snake in the disguise of her uncaring husband. The film, upon release, went on to win many prestigious awards for its content and screen adaptation. The soundtrack, consisting of 15 tracks, tuned by C. Ashwath became very popular for the folksy touch. Vijayalakshmi won Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Kannada for her performance in this film. ''Thaayi Saheba'' () is an Indian Kannada language film released in 1997 directed by Girish Kasaravalli. The film was an adaptation of Kannada novel of same name written by Ranganath Shyamrao Lokapura. Plot summary The film is based on the story of a Brahmin family during the pre independence and post independence periods of India. The protagonist Narmada Thayi is the second wife of Appa Sahib, a freedom fighter. The childless couple decide to adopt the child of Venkobanna, a close relative. Venkobanna has other plans in mind when he gives away his child in adoption. He calculates that his son will inherit the family's money and property. ''Swasthik'' is a 1998 Indian Kannada language thriller film directed by Upendra, starring Raghavendra Rajkumar, Vijayalakshmi and Srinath. At the 1998-99 Karnataka State Film Awards, the film won two awards; Best Art Direction (M. Ismail) and Best Sound Recording (S. Mahendran). ''Kanooru Heggadithi'' (''Kanooru Headwoman'') is a 1999 Indian film based on the 1936 novel " Kanooru Subbamma Heggadithi" by Kannada writer Kuvempu, and directed by playwright and film director Girish Karnad. Set in the Malnad region, the film narrates a story of the land and life of a feudal family in pre-independence Malnad. The film marked Karnad's return to directing after a lapse of over a decade. This is the only instance in the Indian cinema history where one Jnanpith Awardee directed a movie based on the work of another Jnanpith Awardee. Sri Manjunatha (film)
''Sri Manjunatha'' is a 2001 Indian hagiographical film directed by K. Raghavendra Rao and produced by Nara Jaya Sridevi. Shot simultaneously in Kannada and Telugu, the film stars Chiranjeevi, Arjun Sarja, Ambareesh, Soundarya and Meena. Dwarakish and Mimicry Dayanand play supporting roles in the Kannada version while Tanikella Bharani and Brahmanandam replace them in the Telugu version. The film is based on the life of the Shiva devotee, Bhakta Manjunatha of the Kotilingeshwara Temple. The film was released on 22 June 2001 worldwide, while the dubbed Tamil version was released in Tamil Nadu in August 2001. Upon release, the film received positive reviews. Arun Sagar (born 23 October 1963) is an Indian actor, art director and comedian who mainly works in the Kannada film industry. He has been recognized as a leading art director throughout his career starting from his first movie, ''Bhoomi Geetha'' which won the national award for best environmental film. He has worked with veteran directors like Poori Jagannath, Meher Ramesh, Veerashankar and K Raghavendra Rao. He has received Karnataka state award for best art direction for his contributions in the movie Sri Manjunatha.
