Karl Koch (Weezer Assistant)
Karl Michael Koch (September 15, 1969) is a general assistant and "unofficial fifth member" of the American rock band Weezer. He has worked as a roadie, concert photographer, webmaster and social media manager, archivist and historian, and art director since the band's inception. Drummer Patrick Wilson said in 2005, "he bandwouldn't be here if it wasn't for Karl." Koch established and operates Weezer's official website and social media pages, where he publishes his band news column ''Karl's Corner''. Koch and his ''Karl's Corner'' postings are frequently referenced by entertainment publications for insider knowledge on the band. Rivers Cuomo
Rivers Cuomo ( ; born June 13, 1970) is an American musician. He is the lead vocalist, guitarist, pianist, and songwriter of the rock band Weezer. Cuomo was raised in a number of Buddhist communities in the Northeast U.S. until the age of 10, when his family settled in Central Connecticut. He attended a number of public schools before moving to Los Angeles at age 18. Cuomo played in several bands in Connecticut and California before forming Weezer in 1992. Following the success of Weezer's self-titled debut album and the following tour, Cuomo spent time away from music. ''Pinkerton'' is the second studio album by American rock band Weezer, released on September 24, 1996, by DGC Records. After abandoning plans for a rock opera entitled '' Songs from the Black Hole'', Weezer recorded the album between the songwriter Rivers Cuomo's terms at Harvard University, where he wrote most of the songs. To better capture their live sound, Weezer self-produced ''Pinkerton'', creating a darker, more abrasive album than their self-titled 1994 debut. Cuomo's lyrics express loneliness and disillusionment with the rock lifestyle; the album is named after the character BF Pinkerton from Giacomo Puccini's 1904 opera '' Madama Butterfly'', whom Cuomo described as an "asshole American sailor similar to a touring rock star". A rock opera is a collection of rock music songs with lyrics that relate to a common story. Rock operas are typically released as concept albums and are not scripted for acting, which distinguishes them from operas, although several have been adapted as rock musicals. ''Songs from the Black Hole'' is an unfinished album by American rock band Weezer recorded between 1994 and 1996. Intended to follow Weezer's 1994 self-titled debut album, it was to be a rock opera that expressed songwriter Rivers Cuomo's mixed feelings about rock-and-roll success. Its characters were to be voiced by members of Weezer, plus guest vocalists Rachel Haden (of That Dog and the Rentals) and Joan Wasser (of the Dambuilders). Cuomo recorded demos for ''Songs from the Black Hole'' over Christmas 1994, and Weezer held recording sessions over the following year. In late 1995, Cuomo enrolled at Harvard University, where his songwriting became darker and more confessional. The MTV Video Music Award for Best Alternative Video (also known as Best Alternative Music Video) was first given out at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards. Prior to being called Best Alternative Video, it was known as Best Post-Modern Video in 1989 and 1990.
