Karl Eggers
Karl Friedrich Peter Eggers (7 June 1826 – 18 July 1900) was a German lyric poet. His older brother was the art historian, Friedrich Eggers. Biography He was born in Rostock, the fifth of eight children of Christian Friedrich Eggers (1788–1858), a building materials dealer. After completing his primary education, he studied jurisprudence, beginning in 1846 at the University of Leipzig then, in 1847, in Berlin. He passed the bar exam in 1850 and returned to Rostock. He was, however, denied habilitation by the Mecklenburg Ministry of Education. After receiving his Doctorate in law, he worked as a lawyer and Gerichtspräsident (Chief Judge). In 1854, he was elected to the Rostock Stadtrat (City Council). Two years later, he became seriously ill and resigned from all of his positions for a curative stay in Italy. Carl Eggers
Carl Johann Adolf Eggers (1 October 1787, Neustrelitz – 24 July 1863, Neustrelitz) was a German history painter. Life and work From 1809 to 1812, he studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, with the history painter, Friedrich Matthäi. After graduating, in 1813, he made a study trip to Italy. He returned there, three years later, and lived in Rome until 1830. There, became a member of the Nazarene movement, led by Friedrich Overbeck. In 1819, he married Elisabeth Seitz; sister of the engraver, Johann Baptist Seitz (1786-1850). During this time, he devoted himself primarily to fresco painting. He also made detailed examinations of older frescoes, in chemical and mechanical terms, and is credited with developing new techniques for creating them. Theodor Fontane
Theodor Fontane (; 30 December 1819 – 20 September 1898) was a German novelist and poet, regarded by many as the most important 19th-century German-language realist author. He published the first of his novels, for which he is best known today, only at age 58 after a career as a journalist. Fontane's novels are known for their complex, often sceptical view of society in the German empire; he shows different social and political parts of society meeting and sometimes clashing. Other trademarks of Fontane's work are their strongly drawn female characters (such as ''Effi Briest'' and ''Frau Jenny Treibel''), tender irony and vivid conversations between characters. (, literally ''Mouth of the Warnow'') is a seaside resort and a district of the city of Rostock in Mecklenburg, Germany. Ludwig Brunow
Ludwig Brunow (9 July 1843, Lutheran - 13 January 1913, Berlin) was a German sculptor. Life He was the illegitimate child of the local sexton's daughter and spent most of his youth working as a shepherd, but quickly caught up on his education when the opportunity arose. First, he went to Lübz, completing an apprenticeship in carpentry, then found work as a journeyman in Rostock, where he began taking drawing lessons. In 1866, he planned to emigrate to America, but his plans fell through and he became a student of at the Bauakademie in Berlin. The following year, his talent was recognized by the art historian Friedrich Eggers and, at Eggers request, he moved to the Prussian Academy of Art. From 1871 to 1873, he worked as an assistant on the staffs of Rudolf Siemering and Christian Genschow. Christian Daniel Rauch
Christian Daniel Rauch (2 January 1777 – 3 December 1857) was a German sculptor. He founded the Berlin school of sculpture, and was the foremost German sculptor of the 19th century. Life Rauch was born at Arolsen in the Principality of Waldeck in the Holy Roman Empire. His father was employed at the court of Prince Frederick II of Hesse, and in 1790 the lad was apprenticed to the court sculptor of Arolsen, Friedrich Valentin. In 1795, he became assistant to Johann Christian Ruhl, the court sculptor of Kassel. After the death of his father in 1796 and his older brother in 1797, he moved to Berlin where he was appointed groom of the chamber in the king's household. He abandoned sculpture temporarily, but his new position provided a wider field for improvement, and he soon used the opportunity and practised his art in spare hours. Gabelsberger Shorthand
Gabelsberger shorthand, named for its creator, is a form of shorthand previously common in Germany and Austria. Created c. 1817 by Franz Xaver Gabelsberger, it was first fully described in the 1834 textbook ''Anleitung zur deutschen Redezeichenkunst oder Stenographie'' and became rapidly used. Gabelsberger shorthand has a full alphabet with signs for both consonants and vowels. The consonant signs were made by simplifying the features of cursive Latin letters. The vowel signs are used mainly when a vowel stands at the beginning or the end of a word. Vowels in the middle of words are represented symbolically, mainly by varying the position and the impact of the following consonant signs. Contrary to the practice in many English shorthand systems (e.g. Pitman Shorthand), vowels are never entirely omitted.
