Karine Haaland
Karine Haaland (born 29 August 1966 in Bergen) is a Norwegian comic strip creator, animator and illustrator, known for the comic strip ''Piray''. Biography Haaland made her publishing debut in the student paper ''Universitas'' in 1995, but her breakthrough came with inclusion into the Norwegian magazine ''Larsons Gale Verden'', featuring the cartoons of Gary Larson. Her work has since been syndicated to several magazines and newspapers, most notably ''Dagbladet'', ''Dagsavisen'' and ''Bergens Tidende'', although the latter has the distinction of having fired her over a censorship dispute. The books containing her work sell well in Norway and are printed in multiple editions. For several years Haaland's strip ran under no title, and featured no named characters. Eventually, recurring characters became named, such as Louïs who started appearing in 1996, Lolito first featured in 1997, Melis in 1999, and Soto & Simson in 2003. Bergen
Bergen (), historically Bjørgvin, is a city and municipality in Vestland county on the west coast of Norway. , its population is roughly 285,900. Bergen is the second-largest city in Norway. The municipality covers and is on the peninsula of Bergenshalvøyen. It was founded in 1925 after buying rights to publications from the Danish publishing house Gyldendal, which the company also takes it name from. Female (symbol: ♀) is the sex of an organism that produces the large non-motile ova (egg cells), the type of gamete (sex cell) that fuses with the male gamete during sexual reproduction. Sproing Award
The Sproing Award is awarded by Norsk Tegneserieforum (NTF), an organisation to promote interest and understanding for comics in Norway. Since 1987, the award has been presented for the ''Best Norwegian Strips'', a comic strip or comic book by a Norwegian, and ''Best Translated Strips'', an international comic strip/comic book translated into Norwegian. Since 2003, there has also been awarded a Sproing for ''Best Comics Debut''. At NTF's annual meeting, a jury is selected which reads all publications of the year and choose five nominees for the national and international classes, and three nominees for the debut class. Initially, voting was exclusive to NTF members, but has been opened to the public in the 2000s.
