Jorma Karhunen
Jorma "Joppe" Karhunen (17 March 1913 – 18 January 2002) was a Finnish Air Force ace and an author. Karhunen scored 31.5 kills in World War II; 25.5 of his air victories were achieved while flying the Brewster F2A Buffalo, an American fighter.Stenman and Thomas 2010, p. 85. Soon after the outbreak of the Continuation War, on 25 June 1941, when he was 1st Lt, Karhunen led the 3rd Flight (of eight Brewster Buffalo) of ''Lentolaivue'' ''(LLv) 24'', based at Vesivehmaa.Stenman and Thomas 2010, p. 11. On 9 July, Karhunen was one of the dozen Brewster pilots led by Major Gustaf Magnusson on a patrol over Lahdenpohja, that in a ten-minute air combat shot down eight out of 15 Soviet bombers and fighters.Stenman and Thomas 2010, pp. 13-14. Esko Karhunen
Esko Ensio ”Sir Emal” Karhunen (4 January 1928 – 8 March 2016) was a Finnish basketball player and contributor. The Karhunen spent his whole SM-sarja career at Pantterit basketball club, and its predecessors, in Helsinki, and was in a record 13 Finnish championship-winning teams. He was also capped eight times for the Finland men's national team and represented his country at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki. After his career as a player, Karhunen was a basketball contributor in Pantterit. Kari Karhunen
Karl Onni Uolcvi Karbunen (April 12, 1915 – September 16, 1992) was a Finnish probabilist and a mathematical statistician. He is best known for the Karhunen–Loève theorem and Karhunen–Loève transform. Education and career Karhunen received his master's degree in 1938 and his doctorate in 1950 from the University of Helsinki. The topic of his thesis was (in German) ''Über lineare Methoden in der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung'', in English ''On linear methods in probability and statistics''. The advisor of his thesis was the mathematician Rolf Nevanlinna. Karhunen worked as a lecturer at the University of Helsinki before leaving the academic world to be employed by the insurance corporation Suomi, becoming CEO of the company in 1963. Karhunen served in 1955 on the Finnish Committee for Mathematical Machines, which developed the first Finnish computer ESKO. Tomi Karhunen
Tomi Karhunen (born 29 October 1989) is a Finnish professional ice hockey goaltender. He is currently playing with SC Bern of the National League (NL). Playing career Karhunen made his SM-liiga debut playing with Oulun Kärpät during the 2010–11 SM-liiga season. At the end of the 2011–12 campaign, he joined HC Slovan Bratislava on loan, helping the team capture the Slovak championship. He won the Finnish SM-liiga title with Kärpät in 2014 and 2015. In summer 2015, he was transferred to fellow SM-liiga team Tappara and won his third straight championship during the 2015-16 season. He signed with newly founded KHL side Kunlun Red Star from China in July 2016. Seeing limited ice time due competition with Swedish national team goalie Magnus Hellberg, he signed with HC Vityaz Podolsk for the remaining of the 2017–18 season. The Virtanen type Finnish surnames are the surnames that became popular in the 19th century in western Finland and that are formed by combining of a word related to nature (but not an animal) with the suffix '' -nen''.
