Esko Karhunen
Esko Ensio ”Sir Emal” Karhunen (4 January 1928 – 8 March 2016) was a Finnish basketball player and contributor. The Karhunen spent his whole SM-sarja career at Pantterit basketball club, and its predecessors, in Helsinki, and was in a record 13 Finnish championship-winning teams. He was also capped eight times for the Finland men's national team and represented his country at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki. After his career as a player, Karhunen was a basketball contributor in Pantterit. He organized a practise tournament which was played between 1971–2000 and brought the Harlem Globetrotters to Finland. Karhunen was inducted into the Finnish Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012. Pantterit
Pantterit (English: ''Panthers'') is a basketball club from Helsinki, Finland. The club was formed in 1938 and it has won the men's Finnish championship title for 14 times making it the most successful team in Finnish basketball history. Pantterit also has 5 women's Finnish championship titles. History Men The club was formed in 1938 and were originally named Kiri-Veikot. Pantterit played in the very first season of Finnish championship in basketball in 1939. The club took its first championship title in 1944 and became the club to beat in two following decades. Pantterit became the first Finnish team to participate in international basketball competitions, as they played against polish Legia Warsaw in the 1958 season of Champions Cup. Finnish Basketball Hall Of Fame
The Finnish Basketball Hall of Fame is a hall of fame that is the highest honor that is bestowed upon people that have impacted the sport of basketball in Finland. New Hall of Fame members are chosen by the Hall's board of experts, coming from the Finnish Basketball Federation, the Finnish Basketball Foundation, the Sports Museum of Finland, among others. The first members were inducted in 2009. In both August 2015, and 2016, four new people were inducted. In 2017, there were six new inductees, in 2018, four, and in 2019, eight. Basketball At The 1952 Summer Olympics
Basketball at the 1952 Summer Olympics was the third appearance of the sport of basketball as an official Olympic medal event. 23 nations entered the competition. The top six teams at the 1948 Summer Olympics qualified automatically, as did the winners of the 1950 FIBA World Championship (Argentina), the top two teams at the 1951 EuroBasket ( USSR and Czechoslovakia), and the host country ( Finland). Thirteen other nations competed in a preliminary round to determine the last six places in the sixteen-team Olympic tournament. Korisliiga
The Korisliiga is the top-tier professional basketball league in Finland, comprising the top 12 teams of the country. In its current format, each team plays all other teams two times in the regular season, once at home and once away, for a total of 22 regular season games. The top six teams advances continues to upper stage and the bottom six teams plays lower stage after 22 games, 5 games at home and 5 games at away versus all other teams in stage. The best two teams from lower group joins to playoffs with upper group teams. Playoffs are played best of seven format, except the quarter-finals which are played best of 5 format. Finland National Basketball Team
The Finland men's national basketball team ( fi, Suomen koripallomaajoukkue, sv, Finlands herrlandslag i basket) represents Finland in international basketball competition. The national team is governed by Basketball Finland. Finland has played in 17 EuroBasket tournaments, with their best finish coming in sixth place at EuroBasket 1967 on home soil. The national team has also reached the Olympic Games twice, in 1952 as the host, and 1964. In 2014, Finland qualified for their first ever appearance to the FIBA World Cup. The Harlem Globetrotters are an American exhibition basketball team. They combine athleticism, theater, and comedy in their style of play.
