Karch Kiraly
Charles Frederick "Karch" Kiraly () (born November 3, 1960) is an American volleyball player, coach and broadcast announcer. In the 1980s he was a central part of the U.S National Team that won gold medals at the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games. He went on to win the gold medal again at the 1996 Olympic Games, the first Olympic competition to feature beach volleyball. He is the only player (man or woman) to have won Olympic medals of any color in both the indoor and beach volleyball categories. He played college volleyball for the UCLA Bruins, where his teams won three national championships under head coach Al Scates. Kiraly is currently the head coach of the United States women's national volleyball team leading them to their first-ever gold medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and thereby completing the "triple crown" of coaching an Olympic gold medal winning team as well as personally winning gold medals in both indoor and beach volleyball. Robert Hosack Karch (July 4, 1894November 14, 1958) was an American football player. Karch was born in 1894 in Columbus, Ohio. He played college football at Ohio State and was selected by Frank G. Menke to the 1916 All-America college football team. He also played professional football as a tackle in the National Football League (NFL). He played for the Columbus Panhandles The Columbus Panhandles were a professional American football team based in Columbus, Ohio. The club was founded in 1901 by workers at the Panhandle shops of the Pennsylvania Railroad. They were a part of the Ohio League from 1904 before foldi ... (1922) and the Louisville Brecks (1923). He appeared in six NFL games, all as a starter. Karch sustained a heart attack in 1955 and shot and killed himself at his home in Bexley, Ohio, in 1958.
