Karara () is a rural town and locality in the Southern Downs Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Karara had a population of 123 people. Geography The town is on the Darling Downs on the Cunningham Highway, south west of the state capital, Brisbane. The highway passes through the locality from the east to the south-west. The Toowoomba–Karara Road ( State Route 48) connects the highway through to the north of the locality to Leyburn and ultimately through to Toowoomba. The South Western railway line passes through the locality roughly parallel and to the north of the highway with the locality served by two railway stations: * Durikai railway station, now abandoned () * Karara railway station, serving the town (). Both the line and Karara railway station are no longer in active use. The Karara and Lochada Important Bird Area is a 2404 km2 tract of land in the Mid West region of Western Australia, about 30 km east of the town of Morawa and 320 km north-east of Perth. Description The Important Bird Area (IBA) incorporates the former pastoral properties of Karara and Lochada, with small areas of adjacent land. It contains large areas of ''Acacia'' shrubland with some open eucalypt woodland. It lies at an altitude of 280–400 m above sea level in pastoral country adjacent to the wheatbelt. Its average annual rainfall of about 300 mm is highly variable and falls mainly in winter. Birds The site has been identified by BirdLife International as an IBA because it supports populations of the vulnerable malleefowl and the restricted-range western corella, as well as of Bourke's and regent parrots, western bowerbirds, rufous treecreepers, black honeyeaters, slaty-backed thornbills, chiming wedgebills, chestnut-breasted quail-thrushes ...

Karara Mine
The Karara mine is a large iron mine located in the Mid West region of Western Australia. Karara has estimated reserves of 2 billion tonnes of ore grading 35.5% iron metal. It is one of the few magnetite producers in Western Australia. It is owned by Ansteel Group (52.16%) and Gindalbie Metals (47.84%). The mine is operated by Karara Mining Limited. Timeline * In 2011, steelwork for the Karara project was delayed by major floods in Thailand. * In 2014, production was increased by over 35% in the June quarter, with more than 2 million tons of iron ore being shipped. The Karara railway is a railway line in the Mid West (Western Australia), Mid West region of Western Australia, linking the Karara mine, Karara iron ore mine with the Arc Infrastructure network near Morawa, Western Australia, Morawa. The railway is leased by Karara Mining Limited and trains are operated by Aurizon between the mine and Geraldton port. Route The Karara railway is managed by Karara Mining Limited, a joint venture between Gindalbie Metals and Ansteel Group. Karara Mining Limited holds a 49-year lease on the rail corridor from the Public Transport Authority (Western Australia), Public Transport Authority, which began in August 2012. It branches off the Perenjori, Western Australia, Perenjori–Mullewa, Western Australia, Mullewa railway line north of Morawa, Western Australia, Morawa at Tilley Junction.
