Karachi Time ( ur, , abbreviated as KART, LMT or Local Mean Time) was a time zone set at UTC+04:28:12 ahead of Greenwich Mean Time and observed prior until 1907 in Karachi. The local time was established by the Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry. From 1951 to 1971, the term ''Karachi Time'' was again used to denote UTC+05:00 for West Pakistan abbreviated as KART as opposed to Dacca Time (DACT) used in East Pakistan. A time zone is an area which observes a uniform standard time for legal, Commerce, commercial and social purposes. East Pakistan was a Pakistani province established in 1955 by the One Unit Scheme, One Unit Policy, renaming the province as such from East Bengal, which, in modern times, is split between India and Bangladesh. Its land borders were with India and Myanmar, with a coastline on the Bay of Bengal. Pakistan Standard Time ( ur, , abbreviated as PKT) is UTC+05:00 hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time. The time zone is in use during standard time in Asia. History Pakistan had been following UTC+05:30 since 1907 (during the British Raj) and continued using it after independence in 1947. On 15 September 1951, following the findings of mathematician Mahmood Anwar, two time zones were introduced. ''Karachi Time (KART)'' was introduced in West Pakistan by adjusting 30 minutes off UTC+05:30 to UTC+05:00, while ''Dacca Time'' (DACT) was introduced in East Pakistan by subtracting 30 minutes off UTC+06:30 to UTC+06:00. The area of Karachi ( ur, کراچی, sd, ڪراچي) in Sindh, Pakistan has a natural harbor and has been used as fishing port by local fisherman belonging to Sindhi tribes since prehistory. Archaeological excavations have uncovered a period going back to Indus valley civilisation which shows the importance of the port since the Bronze Age.
