Kapangan, Benguet
Kapangan, officially the Municipality of Kapangan, ( ilo, Ili ti Kapangan; tl, Bayan ng Kapangan), is a 4th class municipality in the province of Benguet, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 19,297 people. History Pre-colonial period Kapangan was formerly called ''Takdang'' (or ''Tacdang''), which means "people from the east". The early natives, who came from eastern settlements such as ''Tinec'' in Buguias and Bontoc, settled along the Amburayan River and lived by the '' kaingin'' system. They traveled to Naguilian in La Union to trade goods with the Ilocano people The appointed first town president (before now mayor) is Espiritu Cariño (1898–1900) . Kaingin
Slash-and-burn agriculture is a farming method that involves the cutting and burning of plants in a forest or woodland to create a field called a swidden. The method begins by cutting down the trees and woody plants in an area. The downed vegetation, or "slash", is then left to dry, usually right before the rainiest part of the year. Then, the biomass is burned, resulting in a nutrient-rich layer of ash which makes the soil fertile, as well as temporarily eliminating weed and pest species. After about three to five years, the plot's productivity decreases due to depletion of nutrients along with weed and pest invasion, causing the farmers to abandon the field and move to a new area. The time it takes for a swidden to recover depends on the location and can be as little as five years to more than twenty years, after which the plot can be slashed and burned again, repeating the cycle. Amburayan River
The Amburayan River is a river in the northeastern portion of island of Luzon in the Philippines. It originates from the Cordillera mountains and traverses the provinces of Benguet, La Union, and Ilocos Sur. With a total length of where it empties into the now (West PHILIPPINE Sea) then formerly South China Sea. The river serves as the boundary between the provinces of Ilocos Sur and La Union. Bontoc, Mountain Province
Bontoc, officially the Municipality of Bontoc ( ilo, Ili ti Bontoc; tl, Bayan ng Bontoc), is a 2nd class municipality and capital of the province of Mountain Province, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 24,104 people. Bontoc is from Manila. Bontoc is the historical capital of the entire Cordillera region since the inception of governance in the Cordillera. The municipality celebrates the annual Lang-ay Festival. Bontoc is home to the Bontoc tribe, a feared war-like group of indigenous people who actively indulged in tribal wars with its neighbors until the 1930s. Every Bontoc male had to undergo a rite of passage into manhood, which may include headhunting, where the male has to journey (sometimes with companions) and hunt for a human head. Buguias, officially the Municipality of Buguias, ( ilo, Ili ti Buguias; tl, Bayan ng Buguias), is a 3rd class municipality in the province of Benguet, Philippines.
