Kannada Cinema
Kannada cinema, also known as Sandalwood, or Chandanavana, is the segment of Indian cinema dedicated to the production of motion pictures in the Kannada language widely spoken in the state of Karnataka. The 1934 film ''Sati Sulochana'' directed by Y. V. Rao was the first talkie film in the Kannada language. It was also the first film starring Subbaiah Naidu and Tripuramba, and was the first motion picture screened in the erstwhile Mysore Kingdom. The film was produced by Chamanlal Doongaji, who in 1932 founded ''South India Movietone'' in Bangalore. Major literary works have been adapted to the Kannada screen such as B. V. Rajan–Nagendra
Rajan–Nagendra were an Indian musical duo who were prominent composers of film music in Kannada and Telugu cinema from the late 1950s to the early 1990s. Rajan, along with his brother Nagendra, created a niche for themselves for nearly four decades. The duo scored music for about 375 films, over 200 of them in Kannada and the remainder in other languages like Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Tulu, Hindi and Sinhala. They composed innumerable hits, hundreds of melodious tunes in their career spanning four decades. They also hold the record for the longest active musical pair in the industry. Childhood Rajan (1933–2020) and Nagendrappa (1935–2000) were born in Shivarampet of Mysore in a middle-class musical family. Jayanthi (actress)
Kamala Kumari (6 January 1945 – 26 July 2021), known by her mononymous stage name Jayanthi, was an Indian actress known for her work in Kannada cinema and Tamil cinema. She was noted for her contributions to different genres of films from the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s. She had appeared in over 500 films, including films in the Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi and Marathi languages. She had received seven Karnataka State Film Awards, four times as Best Actress and twice as Best Supporting Actress, the President's Medal for Best Actress and two Filmfare Awards for Best Actress. She has been cited as Kannada cinema's "most bold and beautiful" actress by various media outlets, a title for which she has received substantial publicity. ''Kranti Veera'' is a 1972 Indian Kannada-language action drama film directed and produced by R. Ramamurthy. It stars Rajkumar, Rajesh and Jayanthi. The film's story was written by R. Rangarajan and Satyam was the soundtrack and score composer. The dialogues and lyrics were written by Chi. Udaya Shankar. The song ''Elli harikatha prasangavo'' had P. B. Sreenivas and Rajkumar playback singing together for the first time. The film is a classic case of visual representation of political transition from monarchy to democracy. Gangadhar
Gangadhar (1936–2003) was an Indian actor known for his work in Kannada cinema. A character actor who transitioned from stage to films in the mid-1960s, he had a brief period of success when his performances in social-dramas such as ''Gejje Pooje'' (1969), ''Sharapanjara'' (1971) and ''Seetha'' (1970) were noted. In addition to the former two, he starred in '' Katha Sangama'' (1975) and ''Ranganayaki'' (1981), all of which were directed by Puttanna Kanagal. Other films he starred in include ''Nanna Thamma'' (1970), ''Aliya Geleya'' (1971) and ''Bhale Adrushtavo Adrushta'' (1972). Gangadhar returned to stage in the 1980s after film opportunities failed to come his way; poor health condition led him to retire from acting in 1995, when he was aged 59. Gangadhar appeared in a total of 80 Kannada-language films and was awarded the Rajyotsava Award by the government of Karnataka in recognition of his contribution to Kannada cinema. Geethapriya
Lakshman Rao Mohite (15 June 1932 – 17 January 2016), better known by his pen-name Geethapriya ( kn, ಗೀತಪ್ರಿಯ), was an Indian film director and lyricist of the Kannada film industry. He has directed 40 films and penned over 250 songs in Kannada films. In 1992–93, he was awarded the Puttanna Kanagal Award for his contribution to Kannada cinema as a director. Early life Geethapriya was born as Lakshman Rao Mohite in 1931, to Ramarao Mohite and Lakshmibai. His father worked for the cavalry regiment of Mysore State Troops called Mysore Lancers, which was stationed in Bangalore. Even though his mother tongue was Marathi, he was always interested in the Kannada language and was admitted to a Kannada-medium school. The poet P. T. Bungle Shama Rao Dwarakanath (born 19 August 1942), better known as Dwarakish ( ), is an Indian actor, director and producer in the Kannada film industry. He was given the name Dwarakish by Kannada film maker C. V. Shivashankar. Early life Dwarakish was born on 19 August 1942. He grew up in Ittigegud, Mysore. He received his primary education in Sharada Vilas and Banumaiah's school, and he graduated from CPC Polytechnic with a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. After completing his education, Dwarakish and his brother started an automotive spare-parts business called "Bharath Auto Spares" in Gandhi Square, Mysore. He was strongly attracted to acting and often asked his maternal uncle, a famous cinema director Hunusur Krishnamurthy, to give him a chance to act in movies. Satyam (music Director)
Chellapilla Satyanarayana Sastry (1933 - 12 January 1989), known mononymously as Satyam, was an Indian music composer. He was popular in the Telugu and Kannada film industries in the 1960s to 1980s. Sathyam is best remembered as "Andhra R. D. Burman". He also composed a handful of Bengali, Bhojpuri, and Hindi films. Satyam was born in Gunanupuram village,Komarada mandal in Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh. He had acted in some plays with popular writer Rajasri and others at Vizianagaram.
