''Kanimbla'' (later ''Kurra-Ba'') was a " K-class" ferry on Sydney Harbour. Launched in 1910, the timber-hulled steamer was built for Sydney Ferries Limited during the boom in cross-harbour ferry travel prior to the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. ''Kanimbla'' was renamed "Kurra-Ba" in 1935. She was laid up in the 1940s and broken up in the 1950s. She was very similar to '' Kosciusko'' (1911), and although built by different builders, the two ferries often considered sister ships. "Kanimbla" is an Australian Aboriginal name thought to mean "big fight". The ''Kanimbla'' class was a class of amphibious transport ships (designated Landing Platform Amphibious) operated by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Two ships (originally built as tank landing ships for the United States Navy) were purchased by Australia in 1994 and modified. Problems during the handover process and the need to repair previously unidentified defects meant the ships did not enter operational service until the end of the decade. Since then, the two ships have been deployed to the Solomon Islands in 2000–01, Vanuatu in 2001, and participated in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, the Australian response to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the Australian deployment to East Timor following the 2006 political crisis, and Operation Quickstep off Fiji. Kanimbla is a suburb of Cairns in the Cairns Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Kanimbla had a population of 2,670 people. Geography Kanimbla is west of the city centre. The suburb straddles the upper reaches of Moody's Creek and is bordered to the north by the Cairns Western Arterial Road (state route 91). The main road that goes through Kanimbla is Ramsey Drive. Along the middle of the northern boundary is Whites Gap. In the south west elevations reach heights greater than 500 m towards the summit of Mooroobool Peak.
