Nepali Cinema, also referred to as "''Nepali Chalachitra''" ( ne, नेपाली चलचित्र) in Nepali, is the filmmaking industry in Nepal. This includes films in various languages of Nepal, most notably in Nepali, Maithili and Bhojpuri. The term ''Kollywood'' is also used, as a portmanteau for films produced in the Nepali language while the Nepalese films produced from Kathmandu and Janakpur in the Maithili language is known as ''Mithilawood''. Both of these film industries are the largest viewing cinema of Nepal and are collectively known as Kollywood. History The making of Nepalese films is said to have begun with D.B. Nepali Language
Nepali (; , ) is an Indo-Aryan language native to the Himalayas region of South Asia. It is the official, and most widely spoken, language of Nepal, where it also serves as a '' lingua franca''. Nepali has official status in the Indian state of Sikkim and in the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration of West Bengal. It is spoken by about a quarter of Bhutan's population. Lata Mangeshkar () (born as Hema Mangeshkar; 28 September 1929 – 06 February 2022) was an Indian playback singer and occasional music composer. Kusume Rumal
''Kusume Rumal'' ( ne, कुसुमे रुमाल; ) is a 1985 Nepali romantic film written and directed by Tulsi Ghimire. It was produced by Sumitra Paudel under the banner of Sayapatri Films. The film featured Bhuwan K.C, Tripti Nadakar, Udit Narayan and Neer Shah in lead roles. This was the first film in which singer Udit Narayan acted. It is one of the most loved films in Nepal and was the first Nepali film to celebrate silver jubilee. The film received critical acclaim for its story, portrayal of class discrimination, performance of the cast, especially Bhuwan K.C., and the chartbuster music. ''Samjhana'' ( ne, सम्झना) is a 1983 love story directed by Shambhu Pradhan. It starred the first golden couple of Nepali cinema, Bhuwan K.C. and Tripti Nadakar. The film was a major hit at the box office. The music of the film, composed by Ranjit Gazmer, became very popular. Binod Pradhan was the cinematographer of the film. Film Tripti plays both the wife and daughter of Bhuwan in the film. Guru Prasad Mainali
Guru Prasad Mainali ( ne, गुरुप्रसाद मैनाली; 7 September 1900 – 8 June 1971) was a Nepalese short story writer and civil servant. Mainali is considered one of the best short story writers of Nepali literature. He is best-known for his short story anthology ''Naso''. Early life Mainali was born in a middle class Brahmin family in Kanpur,in (1957 BS. bhadra 23) Kavrepalanchok district. The son of Kashi Nath Mainali and Kashi Rupa Devi Mainali, he joined a government job for his living. Career Mainali's works contributed to the development of Nepali short stories. Shanti Thatal () is an Indian music composer and singer,, known for her works in Nepali film industry. She has more than 200 songs to her credit, including music for several Nepali films. She is the first female music composer of the Nepali film industry. Personal life Thatal was born on 4 April 1938 in Darjeeling, India to father Manu Singh Thatal and mother Chandra Maya Thatal. She initially learned music under the mentorship of Shiva Prasad Singh and Bhanu Ghosh. She did her schooling at St. Teresa School, Darjeeling and went on to complete her bachelor's degree in music. Later she moved to Calcutta to learn music at Rabindra Bharati University. Basundhara Bhusal is a Nepali movie and theater actor. She was one of the actresses in the first Nepali movie '' Aama'' (1964). Since then, she has acted in at least 135 feature films and 60 TV programs. She started her career in theater, acting in plays at the ''Rastriya Nachghar'' since the 1960s. Shree Amber Gurung ( ne, अम्बर गुरुङ) (26 February 1938 – 7 June 2016) was a Nepalese composer, singer, and lyricist. He composed Nepal's national anthem, "Sayaun Thunga Phulka". Early life Amber Gurung was born in Darjeeling, India, where his father and former soldier in the British Indian Army, Ujir Singh Gurung, served as a policeman from Gorkha district, Nepal. His mother encouraged him to sing and compose as a child, and he taught himself to play Nepali, Indian, and Western instruments. Aruna Lama
Aruna Lama (9 September 19454 February 1998) was an Indian-born Nepali language singer from Darjeeling. She is popularly known as 'Nightingale of the Hills'. She sang hundreds of Nepali songs, including some for Nepali film, and left an indelible mark as one of the best singers in Nepali music. Biography Lama was born on 9 September 1945 at Ghoom Pahar, Darjeeling, British India to Nepali parents Surya Bahadur Lama and Sanmaya Lama. Her uncle C.B. Prem Dhoj Pradhan (6 June 1938 – 6 May 2021) was a Nepalese musician. He was a singer, composer, and regional playback singer. He sang in the two major languages of Nepal: Newari and Nepali. He was also known as the Golden Voice and King of Romantic Melodies of Nepal.
