Kaj Leo Kristensen
Kaj Leo Kristensen (7 November 1917 – 17 March 1945) was a member of the Danish resistance executed by the German occupying power. Biography On 26 February 1945, Kristensen and six other members of the Holger Danske resistance group were arrested by the Gestapo in Skindergade 44, Copenhagen. They were all executed in Ryvangen on 17 March. After his death On 29 August 1945 Kristensen and 105 other victims of the occupation were given a state funeral in the memorial park founded at the execution and burial site in Ryvangen where his remains had been recovered. Ryvangen Memorial Park
Ryvangen Memorial Park ( da, Mindelunden i Ryvangen) is a memorial park in Ryvangen officially inaugurated on 5 May 1950 to commemorate fallen members of the Danish resistance to the German occupation of Denmark during World War II. The location in ''Ryvangen'', which means "rye field", was acquired in 1893 by the army for a barracks and exercise field. On 29 August 1943, when the Danish cooperation with Germany broke down the German occupying forces seized the army and naval facilities in all of Denmark including Ryvangen. While the German army used the barracks for themselves, part of the exercise field was used as an execution and burial site for members of the Danish resistance. The execution site consisted of three wooden poles to which the condemned were tied and executed by firing squad. Hans Fuglsang-Damgaard (29 July 1890 – 8 July 1979) was a bishop of the diocese of Copenhagen for 25 years including the years of the Nazi Germany, German occupation. Early life and education Hans Fuglsang-Damgaard was born on 29 July 1890 in Fuglsang, Oksenvad parish to proprietor Ole Christian Damgaard. Ryvangen or Ryvangskvarteret (English language, English: The Ryvang neighbourhood) is a neighbourhood of single-family detached homes in the northern part of Østerbro, on the border with Hellerup, in Copenhagen, Denmark. History The name Ryvangen translates to "The Rye Field". The portion located to the west of the Nordbanen, north-bound railway line was ceded to the Royal Danish Army, Army in 1893 and used for the construction of the Svanemøllen Barracks. The area on the east side of the railway tracks was used for the establishment of a new residential neighbourhood of single-family, detached houses in a successful attempt to keep wealthy tax-payers in the municipality. Execution by firing squad, in the past sometimes called fusillading (from the French ''fusil'', rifle), is a method of capital punishment, particularly common in the military and in times of war. Some reasons for its use are that firearms are usually readily available and a gunshot to a vital organ, such as the brain or heart, most often will kill relatively quickly. A firing squad is normally composed of several soldiers, all of whom are usually instructed to fire simultaneously, thus preventing both disruption of the process by one member and identification of who fired the lethal shot.
