Kafireas
Kafireas ( el, Καφηρέας) is a former community in Euboea, Greece, named after the nearby Cape Kafireas. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Karystos, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 77.770 km2. Population 342 (2011). The seat of the community was in Amygdalia, Euboea, Amygdalia. Kafireas (Cavondoros) is a Arvanitika speaking community. Cape Kafireas
Cape Caphereus or Cape Kafireas ( el, Ακρωτήριο Καφηρέας, older form: Καφηρεύς), also known as Cavo D'Oro ( el, Κάβο Ντόρο, from the Italian language, Italian for "Cape of Gold") is a promontory on the southeastern tip of the island of Euboea in the Aegean Sea. With the nearby island of Andros, it forms the Kafireas Straits or Doro Channel - historically called the Doro Passage or D'Oro Passage. In earlier times the channel was one of the most dangerous areas for shipping in the entire Aegean. The Battle of Doro Passage took place on 16 October 1827, and was a small naval engagement in which a British merchant ship, ''Comet'', was captured by Greek pirates but then liberated by an escorting warship USS Porpoise (1820), USS ''Porpoise''. Euboea ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Εύβοιας) is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the administrative region of Central Greece. It consists of the islands of Euboea and Skyros, as well as a 260 km² area on the Greek mainland. Its land area is 4,167.449 km², whereas the total land area of the municipalities actually on the island Euboea is 3,684.848 km², which includes that of numerous small offshore islets (Petalies Islands) near Euboea's southern tip. Karystos
Karystos ( el, Κάρυστος) or Carystus is a small coastal town on the Greece, Greek island of Euboea. It has about 5,000 inhabitants (12,000 in the municipality). It lies 129 km south of Chalkis. From Athens it is accessible by ferry via Marmari from the port of Rafina. After the Greek war of independence, its urban plan was laid out by the renowned Bavarian civil engineer Bierbach, in the middle of the 19th century. Arvanitika (; Arvanitika: , ; Greek: , ), also known as Arvanitic, is the variety of Albanian traditionally spoken by the Arvanites, a population group in Greece. Arvanitika is today endangered, as its speakers have been shifting to the use of Greek and most younger members of the community no longer speak it.
