KWXY
KWXY (1340 AM) is a commercial radio station licensed to Cathedral City, California, and serving the Palm Springs radio market in the Coachella Valley. The station was founded in 1964 and is owned by Louie Comella, through licensee IVOX RADIO LLC. Studios, offices and the transmitter are on Dinah Shore Drive. Programming is simulcast on 99-watt FM translator station K222DA at 92.3 MHz. History The station previously simulcast on 1340 AM but sold the AM frequency to Ric and Rozene Supple's R&R Radio Corporation of Palm Springs, who flipped the format from its original beautiful music format to progressive talk on August 7, 2006 and changed the call sign to KPTR, making it the area's first Air America Radio affiliate. The network went bankrupt October 13, 2006 but had resumed operation under new ownership until it ultimately shut down in January 2010 and filed for liquidation. KKGX (920 AM) is a radio station licensed to Palm Springs, California, United States. The station is owned by Louie Comella through licensee IVOX MEDIA, LLC and serves the Coachella Valley area. Both KKGX and sister station KWXY are based in the original KWXY Broadcast Center building in Cathedral City. Under the previous ownership, the original 1964 "KWXY" neon lettering on the building's façade was replaced by modern, back-lit LED lettering identifying the stations as "KGX". The neon letters are presently undergoing restoration and will be relocated to the façade once completed. Scott Ellsworth (''née'' Harvey Charles Ellsworth, January 4, 1927) is an American radio personality, news presenter, and actor. The host of ''Scott's Place'', a jazz radio broadcast that came to prominence in the late 1960s, he has been on the air at Financial News Network, KFI, KCOP-TV, KNX-TV in Los Angeles and KWXY in Cathedral City, California. Early life and education Scott Ellsworth was born Harvey Charles Ellsworth in Plymouth, Pennsylvania in 1927. He moved with his family to Pompton Lakes, New Jersey where he graduated from Pompton Lakes High School in 1944. Dave Hull (January 20, 1934 – October 15, 2020), known as "The Hullabalooer", was an American radio personality voted one of the top ten Los Angeles radio personalities of all time. Career Hull began his radio career in Armed Forces Radio in Casablanca, Morocco and in commercial radio in 1955 at KGFL in Roswell, New Mexico. He got his nickname while working at WONE in Dayton, Ohio. Los Angeles radio historian Don Barrett quotes Hull as saying: "A woman wrote me from a hotel outside Dayton to say she couldn't stand all that hullabaloo. Well, ''Webster's'' defined it as a 'tumultuous outroar,' so I used it." He reached Los Angeles' KRLA in the summer of 1963 as weekend relief and went full-time there in the 9pm-midnight slot by the fall of 1963. KDES-FM (98.5 MHz) is a radio station in the Palm Springs area and the Coachella Valley of Southern California. KDES-FM began in 1957 on the AM dial at 920 kHz and was affiliated with ABC Radio. KDES-FM (then called KGEC) went on-air in 1963, then adopted the top 40/pop music format in 1975. It switched to an oldies format in 1988. The AM station dropped oldies in 1995, replacing them with news/talk KPSI. KDES-FM's studio headquarters are in Palm Springs. In the 2000s, KDES-FM's signal covers a radius area, from Beaumont to the Morongo Basin to the Imperial Valley. Air America (formerly Air America Radio and Air America Media) was an American radio network specializing in progressive talk radio. It was on the air from March 2004 to January 2010. The network was founded as a left wing alternative to counter talk radio with a right wing perspective. Air America featured programs with monologues by on-air personalities, guest interviews, call-ins from listeners, and news reports.
