KUOO
KUOO (103.9 FM broadcasting, FM) is a radio station that broadcasts an adult contemporary format. Licensed to Spirit Lake, Iowa, United States, it serves the Iowa Great Lakes Area. KUOO is owned by Community First Broadcasting (as of January 1, 2010). The station shares a studio location with sister station KUQQ in Spirit Lake. Founding and Early History KUOO was founded in the early 1980s by Paul Hedberg, owner of several radio stations in southern Minnesota and northern Iowa (including KBEW (AM), KBEW, KQAD, KEEZ, KLSS, and KRIB). Hedberg recounts the impetus for KUOO in his autobiography, ''The Time of My Life'': "Dickinson County, Iowa, had a resident population of 16,000 but during summer months that ballooned to 34,000 – and to as many as 80,000 on weekends. With this in mind, I filed an application with the FCC in the summer of 1983 for a construction permit to operate a new station on 103.9 MHz." Spirit Lake, Iowa
Spirit Lake is a city in Dickinson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 5,439 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Dickinson County. The town is located along the western shore of East Okoboji Lake, in the Iowa Great Lakes region. History The Dakota Sioux originated the name of "Spirit Lake" referring to it as "The Lake of The Spirit." In 1856, three brothers-in-law created the town of Spirit Lake after a visit to the Lakes area piqued their interest. The three brothers-in-law, O.C. Howe, B.F. Parmenter, and R.U. Wheelock, were soon joined by various other settlers, making homes along the lakes' shores. These settlers however, did not get along peacefully with the natives, and on March 13, 1857 Chief Inkpaduta of the Sioux led a revolt against the non-native settlers, killing all but four women. Adult contemporary music (AC) is a form of radio-played popular music, ranging from 1960s vocal and 1970s soft rock music to predominantly ballad-heavy music of the present day, with varying degrees of easy listening, pop, soul, R&B, quiet storm and rock influence. KBEW (1560 AM) is a radio station located in Blue Earth, Minnesota that broadcasts an oldies format. The station is currently owned by Carolyn and Doyle Becker, through licensee Riverfront Broadcasting of Minnesota, Inc. and features programing from CBS News Radio. History Clifford Hedberg, owner of KMRS in Morris, Minnesota, applied for KBEW's original construction permit; in August 1962 the FCC approved the application for a 250-watt daytime-only station. The FCC originally assigned the station the call letters KCLH (for "Clifford LeRoy Hedberg"), but before its first broadcast the call letters were changed to KBEW to reflect many of the communities in Faribault County, Minnesota: Kiester, Blue Earth, Bricelyn, Easton, Elmore, Wells, and Winnebago.
