KRHQ
KRHQ is a 2,600 watt Class A commercial classic rock radio station licensed to Indio, California, with studios in Palm Springs and which serves the greater Coachella Valley on 102.3 FM. The transmitter site is on a peak of the Indio Hills. The station (as KJJZ), one of the first smooth jazz stations in the country, aired in 1996. The frequency was allocated less than three years before to KLCX Palm Desert, the area's first classic rock station. Though KLCX began as one of the most ambitious broadcasting projects to come to the Coachella Valley in years, the station soon fell on hard times. Financial troubles forced the sale of KLCX, its license and equipment to RM Broadcasting, owners of KPLM Palm Springs and KAJR Indian Wells. KJJZ (95.9 FM, "Kool 95.9") is a radio station licensed to Indian Wells, California and broadcasting to the greater Coachella Valley and the Morongo Basin of California. Owned by Marker Broadcasting, it broadcasts an oldies format. History The station first signed on as KAJR and aired an adult hits format as "95.9 Jack FM". The station was launched to give the Coachella Valley a Jack-FM branded station as (KCBS-FM) in Los Angeles, was about 100 miles (160 km) to the west, and could not be listened to in the Coachella Valley. KPLM (106.1 MHz) is one of four Class B FM radio stations serving the Palm Springs, California, area and one of only two 50 kW stations. The others are country formatted 42 kW KDES Palm Springs at 98.5 MHz; contemporary album-oriented rock-formatted 26.5 kW KCLB Coachella, California, Coachella at 93.7 MHz and beautiful music 50 kW KWXY-FM Cathedral City, California, Cathedral City at 92.3 MHz. The station, then called KPAL, was founded in 1974 by Los Angeles radio personality Magnificent Montague, whose trademark shout, "Burn!" was expanded to "Burn, baby, burn" during the 1965 Watts riots.
