KPLM
KPLM (106.1 MHz) is one of four Class B FM radio stations serving the Palm Springs, California, area and one of only two 50 kW stations. The others are country formatted 42 kW KDES Palm Springs at 98.5 MHz; contemporary album-oriented rock-formatted 26.5 kW KCLB Coachella at 93.7 MHz and beautiful music 50 kW KWXY-FM Cathedral City at 92.3 MHz. The station, then called KPAL, was founded in 1974 by Los Angeles radio personality Magnificent Montague, whose trademark shout, "Burn!" was expanded to "Burn, baby, burn" during the 1965 Watts riots. The construction permit for the station was the first issued to an African-American in four decades. Call sign "KPLM" became available in 1979 when a local television station was purchased by ''Esquire'' magazine. KRHQ
KRHQ is a 2,600 watt Class A commercial classic rock radio station licensed to Indio, California, with studios in Palm Springs and which serves the greater Coachella Valley on 102.3 FM. The transmitter site is on a peak of the Indio Hills. The station (as KJJZ), one of the first smooth jazz stations in the country, aired in 1996. The frequency was allocated less than three years before to KLCX Palm Desert, the area's first classic rock station. Though KLCX began as one of the most ambitious broadcasting projects to come to the Coachella Valley in years, the station soon fell on hard times. Financial troubles forced the sale of KLCX, its license and equipment to RM Broadcasting, owners of KPLM Palm Springs and KAJR Indian Wells. Al Lohman (January 15, 1933, Sergeant Bluff, Iowa – October 14, 2002, Rancho Mirage, California) was a personality and comedian with a long career in American radio from the 1950s through the 1980s and into the 1990s. Among his early career stops was a stint as morning man at New York City top-40 station WABC (AM) when it first adopted a pop music format in 1960. But he's best remembered as a Los Angeles, California radio personality who, along with Roger Barkley, had the top-rated morning drive ''The Lohman and Barkley Show'' on KFI Los Angeles through most of the 1970s and early 1980s. KJJZ (95.9 FM, "Kool 95.9") is a radio station licensed to Indian Wells, California and broadcasting to the greater Coachella Valley and the Morongo Basin of California. Owned by Marker Broadcasting, it broadcasts an oldies format. History The station first signed on as KAJR and aired an adult hits format as "95.9 Jack FM". The station was launched to give the Coachella Valley a Jack-FM branded station as ( KCBS-FM) in Los Angeles, was about 100 miles (160 km) to the west, and could not be listened to in the Coachella Valley. The station was founded in 1964 and is owned by Louie Comella, through licensee IVOX RADIO LLC. Studios, offices and the transmitter are on Dinah Shore Drive. Programming is simulcast on 99-watt FM translator station K222DA at 92.3 MHz. Magnificent Montague
Nathaniel "Magnificent" Montague (born in New Jersey, January 11, 1928), is an American R&B disc jockey notable not only for the soul music records he helped promote on KGFJ Los Angeles and WWRL New York City, but also his trademark catch-phrase, "Burn, baby! Burn!" that became the rallying cry of the 1965 Watts riots. Following criticism that this phrase had inadvertently stirred up rioters, Montague advocated non-violence and urged young listeners to pursue their education, coining the new phrase "Learn, baby! Learn!" Semi-retired by the mid-1970s, Montague relocated to Palm Springs, California, where he was instrumental in the launch of easy listening KPLM, today a successful country music station. "What a Wonderful World" is a song written by Bob Thiele (as "George Douglas") and George David Weiss. It was first recorded by Louis Armstrong and released in 1967 as a single. It topped the pop chart in the United Kingdom, but performed poorly in the United States because Larry Newton, the president of ABC Records, disliked the song and refused to promote it. After it was heard in the film '' Good Morning, Vietnam'', it was reissued as a single in 1988, and rose to number 32 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100. Armstrong's recording was inducted to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
