KMFY-FM (96.9 FM) is a radio station licensed to Grand Rapids, Minnesota. KMFY covers the counties of Itasca, Aitkin, Cass and western St. Louis. KMFY broadcasts local weather, sports, local news, and community events. History Originally KXGR, the radio station was sold to Bill and Carla Kirwin in 1989 by Mike and Mary Ives. It was renamed KMFY-FM. In 2001, the station was sold to Mike and Cindy Iaizzo who renamed it Itasca Broadcasting. In 2012, KMFY-FM was sold to Jim and Colleen Lamke, who renamed it Lamke Broadcasting. In November 2021, Lamke Broadcasting announced it had sold KMFY including its sister stations KBAJ and KOZY (AM) including FM translator K226CV 93.1 to Steve Hallstrom and Scott Hennen which they call themselves as Rapids Radio. KOZY (AM)
KOZY is an oldies radio station broadcasting on 1320 AM in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. It is owned by Rapids Radio along with its sister stations, KMFY and KBAJ. The Super Cruiser The Super Cruiser is KOZY's promotional vehicle used in parades and on location reporting. Originally a 1971 Chevy Ambulance, It was retired and sold to KNNS-FM (Now KOZY's sister station, KMFY). Originally owned by Red Rock Radio Corp., it was a KQDS-FM simulcast. Grand Rapids, Minnesota
Grand Rapids is a city in Itasca County, Minnesota, United States, and it is the county seat. The population is 11,126 according to the 2020 census. The city is named for the long rapids in the Mississippi River which was the uppermost limit of practical steamboat travel during the late 19th century. Today the rapids are hidden below the dam of UPM Paper Company. History Grand Rapids became a logging town, as the Mississippi River provided an optimal method of log shipment to population centers. Itasca County
Itasca County (pronounced eye-ta-ska) is located in the State of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 45,014. Its county seat is Grand Rapids. The county is named after Lake Itasca, which is in turn a shortened version of the Latin words ''veritas caput'', meaning 'truth' and 'head', a reference to the source of the Mississippi River. Iron Range
The term Iron Range refers collectively or individually to a number of elongated iron-ore mining districts around Lake Superior in the United States and Canada. Much of the ore-bearing region lies alongside the range of granite hills formed by the Giants Range batholith. These cherty iron ore deposits are Precambrian in the Vermilion Range and middle Precambrian in the Mesabi and Cuyuna ranges, all in Minnesota. The Gogebic Range in Wisconsin and the Marquette Iron Range and Menominee Range in Michigan have similar characteristics and are of similar age.
