Klub Kolarski Lechia Gdańsk ( en, Cycling Club Lechia Gdańsk) is a Polish cycling club based in Gdańsk, Poland. For the most part of its history the club was not successful and has been seen as more of a cycling club for the residents of Gdańsk to join. Road bicycle racing is the cycle sport discipline of road cycling, held primarily on Road surface, paved roads. Road racing is the most popular professional sport, professional form of bicycle racing, in terms of numbers of competitors, events and spectators. Mountain Bike Racing
Mountain bike racing (shortened MTB or ATB racing) is the competitive cycle sport discipline of mountain biking held on off-road terrain. The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) recognised the discipline relatively late in 1990, when it sanctioned the world championships in Durango, Colorado. The first UCI Mountain Bike World Cup series took place in 1988. Its nine-race circuit covered two continents—Europe and North America—and was sponsored by Grundig. Cross-country racing was the only World Cup sport at this time. In 1993, a six-event downhill World Cup was introduced. In 1996, cross-country mountain biking events were added to the Olympic Games. Tour De Pologne
The Tour de Pologne (Polish: ''Wyścig Dookoła Polski'', English: ''Tour of Poland'', official abbreviation TdP,) is an annual, professional men's multiple-stage bicycle race primarily held in Poland. It consists of seven or eight stages and is usually around 1,200 km in length. The race was first held in 1928 and is considered the oldest and most important bicycle race in Poland. Until 1952 the race was held sporadically, but since then it has been an annual race. Until early 1993 the race was open to amateur cyclists only and most of its winners came from Poland. Since 2009, the race has been taking place between July and August. The international cycling association, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), made TdP part of the UCI ProTour in 2005, and part of the UCI World Tour, cycling's highest level of professional men's races, in 2009. Henryk Kowalski (cyclist)
Henryk Kowalski (17 July 1933 – 11 July 2021) was a Polish road cyclist. Born in Turzysk in the Second Polish Republic Kowalski will have been forced to move westwards after World War II due to the changing of borders and expulsion of local populations, with his hometown being given to Ukraine. Kowalski started cycling professionally with Budowlani Warszawa between 1954–1955, spent a short spell with Stal Stocznia in 1956, before spending the majority of his career with KK Lechia Gdańsk between 1957–1970. It was while with Lechia he enjoyed his greatest success, winning the Tour de Pologne twice, in 1957 and 1961. and winning the Vuelta a Cuba in 1967. Kowalski died in Gdańsk aged 88, and is buried in the Żydowski cemetery in Chełm, Gdańsk. Lechia Gdańsk
Lechia Gdańsk () is a Polish football club based in Gdańsk. The club was founded in 1945 by people expelled from Lwów, who were supporters of Poland's oldest football team Lechia Lwów, founded in 1903. The club's name comes from Lechia, a poetic name for Poland, and is a continuation of the name used by the club based in Lwów. In their early years, Lechia enjoyed some success, most notably finishing third in the Polish top division, before spending decades in the second and third tiers. In the early 1980s, Lechia won the Polish Cup, the Polish SuperCup, and played in a European competition for the first time. After having two mergers with other teams in the 1990s the club had to restart from the sixth tier in 2001. In May 2008 the club was promoted again to the Ekstraklasa, with the club's most recent success coming in 2019, finishing third in the league and again winning both the Polish Cup and SuperCup.
