KGFW (1340 AM broadcasting, AM) is an American radio station broadcasting a News Talk Information format. Licensed to Kearney, Nebraska, United States, the station serves the Grand Island-Kearney area. The station is owned by NRG Media and features programming from Fox News Radio, Compass Media Networks, Premiere Networks and Westwood One. KGFW is a sister station to KQKY and KRNY. History The station was founded in Ravenna, Nebraska, in June 1927 by Roy McConnell, a former radio technician in the United States Navy. The station moved to Kearney in 1931. In 1939, the station was purchased by Lloyd "Skipper" Thomas, a Nebraska native who had managed major radio stations including Pittsburgh's KDKA (AM), KDKA and Boston's WBZ (AM), WBZ. Charlie Tuna
Arthur W. Ferguson (April 18, 1944 – February 19, 2016), known professionally as Charlie Tuna, was a radio personality and television host based in Los Angeles, California. Career Radio At age 16, Tuna began working at his hometown's radio station, KGFW. Then, he went to work at KLEO in Wichita, Kansas for a year with the air name "Billy O'Day". He then worked for KOMA Radio in Oklahoma City in 1966, where he took over the "Charlie Tuna" pseudonym from Chuck Riley, who had used it for one show the week before Tuna's arrival. Tuna then moved on to WMEX in Boston for the first 9 months of 1967. In late 1967, KHJ in Los Angeles offered Tuna the 9 to noon slot, where he debuted on Thanksgiving Day 1967. Floyd Kalber (December 23, 1924 – May 13, 2004) was an American television journalist and anchorman, nicknamed "The Big Tuna." Life and career Born in Omaha, Nebraska, he spent two years in the army during World War II and began his television career as KMTV-Omaha's first newscaster. It was at KMTV that he mentored his most famous protégé, Tom Brokaw. Having attracted national attention for his coverage of the manhunt for mass-murderers Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate, in 1962 he became a popular anchorman for WNBQ-TV (later known as WMAQ), NBC's owned-and-operated station in Chicago.
