KCBL (1340 AM is an American sports radio station. Established in 1953 as KMAK and licensed to serve Fresno, California, United States, the station is currently owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. The station switched to the current "KCBL" call sign on December 16, 1996. Its studios are located on Shaw Avenue in North Fresno, and the transmitter tower is north of downtown near Fresno City College. The first station to occupy 1340 kHz in Fresno was KFRE (cf. White's Radio Log, May 1942) which later took over 940 kHz from KTKC, Visalia. KCBL serves as the local affiliate for Fox Sports Radio and NBC Sports Radio. KSOF (98.9 FM "Soft Rock 98.9") is a commercial radio station licensed to Dinuba, California, and serving Fresno and Tulare counties. It is owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. KSOF carries an adult contemporary radio format, switching to Christmas music for much of November and December. The Fresno State Bulldogs are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent California State University, Fresno (commonly referred to as Fresno State). The university is a member of NCAA Division I's Mountain West Conference (MW). It was a member of the Western Athletic Conference from 1992 until 2012, when it left for the Mountain West alongside fellow WAC member Nevada. Fresno State had also been a member of the Big West Conference since the 1969–70 (the conference was known as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association at that time until 1988), and a member of the California Collegiate Athletic Association from its beginning in the 1939–40 season (when Fresno State was in NCAA Division II). In broadcasting and radio communications, a call sign (also known as a call name or call letters—and historically as a call signal—or abbreviated as a call) is a unique identifier for a transmitter station. A call sign can be formally assigned by a government agency, informally adopted by individuals or organizations, or even cryptographically encoded to disguise a station's identity. The use of call signs as unique identifiers dates to the landline railroad telegraph system. Because there was only one telegraph line linking all railroad stations, there needed to be a way to address each one when sending a telegram. In order to save time, two-letter identifiers were adopted for this purpose.
