KATI (Wyoming)
KATI was a radio station broadcasting on 1400 AM in Casper, Wyoming, United States. It operated from 1956 to 1987, folding due to a series of financial problems with its final owner. The license was eventually donated to the University of Wyoming, but an attempt by the university to auction the facility failed, and it never returned to the air. History Early years On November 16, 1955, the Federal Communications Commission awarded a construction permit to John L. "Jack" Breece for a new radio station to broadcast with 250 watts on 1400 kHz in Casper, initially called KTOO. Breece had newspaper and radio interests in Lander. From a site on U.S. Route 87 west of Casper and studios in the Midwest Building on Wolcott Street, KATI debuted on May 5, 1956, though not before thieves stole some of its ground wire from the transmitter site. Casper is a city in, and the county seat of, Natrona County, Wyoming, United States. Casper is the second-largest city in the state, with the population at 59,038 as of the 2020 census. Only Cheyenne, the state capital, is larger. Casper is nicknamed "The Oil City" and has a long history of oil boomtown and cowboy culture, dating back to the development of the nearby Salt Creek Oil Field. KWYY (95.5 FM) is a radio station in Casper, Wyoming, branded as "95.5 My Country" and carrying a country music format. The station is currently owned by Townsquare Media. History KWYY started out as KYOD, "Coyote Country, the New 104.7", at 104.7 FM in the mid-1990s as a country music station. It was moved to its current location on the FM dial in the late 1990s, after being sold by Heart Media to Mountain States Broadcasting. The station was sold to Clear Channel Radio in 1999. Clear Channel sold its Casper stations to GapWest Broadcasting in 2007. GapWest was folded into Townsquare Media on August 13, 2010. KWYY was recently re-branded as "My Country 955" and is using local DJs, rather than the satellite programming it used previously. Wyoming Public Radio (WPR) is the statewide public radio network in Wyoming, and is licensed to the University of Wyoming. Programming and operation Wyoming Public Radio was founded in 1966, and the station's format is similar to that of many other American public radio stations. Although licensed to the University, the network does not produce student-derived programming. Twice a year, in the fall and in the Spring, the station conducts Pledge Drives, which is where a majority of the station's budget comes from.
