KAND (AM)
KAND (1340 AM broadcasting, AM) is a radio station that serves the Corsicana/Ennis/Waxahachie area, and is owned by New Century Broadcasting. This station runs a country music format, and is also the home of Corsicana Independent School District, Corsicana High School Tigers and Navarro College Bulldogs football games, and the latest news from the Texas State Network News, and CBS News. As of July 11, 2008, it airs sports programming from Fox Sports Radio during overnights and weekends. For many years, the KAND call sign was assigned to the station now called KWPW. History KAND began in 1937 in radio, 1937 as a Variety/Entertainment station on 1310 kHz but 10 years later moved to AM 1340 and has maintained its variety format until the 1980s when they made a slow transition to Country music. Corsicana, Texas
Corsicana is a city in Navarro County, Texas, United States. It is located on Interstate 45, 56 miles northeast of Waco, Texas. The population was 23,770 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Navarro County, and an important Agri-business center. History Founded in 1848, Corsicana was named by José Antonio Navarro after the Mediterranean island of Corsica, the birthplace of his father. He had died when Navarro and his many siblings were young. The first school opened shortly afterwards in 1849. Women's groups have had a strong role throughout the history of the city. They established the Corsicana Female Literary Institute, a school that operated from 1857 through 1870. The first public library in Corsicana opened in 1901 by effort of the women's clubs of the city. Navarro College
Navarro College is a public community college in Texas with its main campus in Corsicana and branches in Fairfield, Mexia, Midlothian, and Waxahachie. The college has an annual student enrollment of more than 9,000 students. The Corsicana campus has strong ties with Texas A&M University–Commerce which has branches at the Navarro College campuses in Corsicana and Midlothian. History In spring 1946, a group of local citizens met to form a steering committee for the purpose of establishing a junior college in Navarro County. Wolf Brand Chili
Wolf Brand Chili is a brand of chili con carne currently owned by ConAgra Foods. It is available either with or without beans. History of the brand In 1895, Lyman T. Davis of Corsicana, Texas, sold "Lyman's Famous Chili" for five cents a bowl from the back of a wagon parked on the streets in downtown Corsicana, usually in front of the Blue Front Saloon on Beaton Street. Davis later began canning his chili and marketing it in the immediate area, produced by his company, Lyman's Pure Food Products. It was about that time that he adopted the brand name "Lyman's Famous Wolf Brand Chili", a name in honor of his pet wolf, Kaiser Bill. In 1924, Lyman sold the Wolf brand to J. C. West and Fred Slauson who began expanding the area of distribution for the chili beyond Corsicana.
