Rachel Ruysch
Rachel Ruysch (3 June 1664 – 12 October 1750) was a Dutch still-life painter from the Northern Netherlands. She specialized in flowers, inventing her own style and achieving international fame in her lifetime. Due to a long and successful career that spanned over six decades, she became the best documented woman painter of the Dutch Golden Age. Personal life and career Rachel Ruysch was born on 3 June 1664 in The Hague to the scientist Frederik Ruysch and Maria Post, the daughter of the architect Pieter Post. Her father was also a professor of anatomy and botany and an amateur painter. He had a vast collection of animal skeletons, and mineral and botany samples which Rachel used to practice her drawing skills. At a young age she began to paint the flowers and insects of her father's collection in the popular manner of Otto Marseus van Schrieck. The Netherlands Institute for Art History or RKD (Dutch: RKD-Nederlands Instituut voor Kunstgeschiedenis), previously Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie (RKD), is located in The Hague and is home to the largest art history center in the world. The center specializes in documentation, archives, and books on Western art from the late Middle Ages until modern times. Buiksloot
Buiksloot is a former village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is now a neighbourhood of Amsterdam-Noord. Buiksloot was a separate municipality from 1811 until 1921, when it was merged with Amsterdam. From 1888 to 1956, Buiksloot had a tram connection with Amsterdam-Noord and ''Waterland''. The ''Waterland'' tram had a stop in Buiksloot, near today's ''Nieuwe Leeuwarderweg''. Since 2018, Buiksloot has been cut in half by the ''Noord/Zuidlijn'' metro. Location The old village center lies along the ''Buiksloterdijk'' (a dyke), more specifically at the Northern ''IJdijk'', between Nieuwendam and Oostzaan. The Buiksloot church, built in 1609, is located behind the dyke. To the west of the village, behind the dyke is the ''Buiksloterbreek'', formed after a dyke breach. Gerhard Jan Palthe (21 July 1681 in Denekamp – 30 July 1767 in Deventer), was an 18th-century painter and portraitist from the Northern Netherlands. Biography He was the son of a clergyman of the Walloon church. He studied with Jurriaen Pool the younger and also with Gerrit Dou.
