Joseph Dumont
Joseph Dumont (April 19, 1847 – January 15, 1912) was a merchant and political figure in Quebec. He represented Kamouraska in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1877 to 1878 and Kamouraska in the House of Commons of Canada from 1878 to 1882 as a Liberal member. Biography He was born in Saint-André, Quebec, the son of Lifsey Dumont and Émilie Saint-Pierre, and was educated at Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière. In 1869, he was named a papal zouave at Rome. Dumont was a merchant at Kamouraska. He was elected to the provincial assembly in 1877 after Charles-François Roy was elected to the House of Commons; his election was overturned in March of the following year. Dumont was married twice: to Cléophile Paradis in 1874 and to Marie-Eugénie Gagnon in 1889. He lived in the United States from 1882 to 1887. Kamouraska (federal Electoral District)
Kamouraska was a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1869 to 1979. It was created by the ''British North America Act'', 1867. There was no election in 1867 due to riots. There was a by-election held in 1869 in its place. The district was abolished in 1976 when it was redistributed into Bellechasse, Kamouraska—Rivière-du-Loup and Rimouski ridings. Kamouraska, Quebec
Kamouraska is a municipality on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region of Quebec, Canada. It is part of the Regional County Municipality of Kamouraska. It has been named one of the top 20 most beautiful villages in the province of Quebec, and the municipality is a member of the Most Beautiful Villages of Quebec Association. The name "Kamouraska" comes from an Algonquin word meaning "where rushes grow at the water's edge". History The area was settled by French colonists in the late 17th century. Papal Zouave
The Papal Zouaves ( it, Zuavi Pontifici) were an infantry battalion, later regiment, dedicated to defending the Papal States. Named after the French zouave regiments, the ' were mainly young men, unmarried and Catholic, who volunteered to assist Pope Pius IX in his struggle against the Italian unificationist Risorgimento. Origin The Zouaves evolved out of a unit formed by Louis Juchault de Lamoricière on 23 May 1860, the 'Company of Franco-Belgian Tirailleurs'. The company was quickly increased to a 8-company battalion by amalgamating the Tirailleurs with another volunteer unit, the 'Crusaders of Cathelineau'.
